RALEIGH, NC - Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with right wing Spencer Smallman on a three-year, entry-level contract. On the NHL level, the deal will pay Smallman $650,000 in 2017-18 and 2018-19 and $700,000 in 2019-20. On the AHL level, he will be paid $65,000 in 2017-18 and $70,000 in 2018-19 and 2019-20, and he receives a signing bonus of $225,000.

"Spencer took a big step forward this season," said Francis. "He's been in a leadership role for his team for the last three years, and helped Saint John to the best record in the Quebec League this year."

Smallman, 20, established career highs in goals (30), assists (49) and points (79) for the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) this season. Born in Summerside, P.E.I., but raised in Fredericton, N.B., Smallman ranked second among Sea Dogs skaters in assists, third in points and fourth in goals, and led the team with 38 points (14g, 24a) on the power play. Smallman had three goals and two assists (5 points) during Saint John's four-game sweep of Rimouski in the first round of the QMJHL playoffs.

Smallman (6'1", 200 lbs.) is Saint John's all-time leader in career regular-season games played, and has served as the team's captain for the past two seasons. A fifth-round pick, 138th overall, by the Hurricanes in the 2015 NHL Draft, he totaled 223 points (86g, 137a) and 223 penalty minutes in 293 career regular-season games for the Sea Dogs. His teammates with St. John include Hurricanes' 2016 first-round selection Julien Gauthier and 2015 fourth-round pick Callum Booth.

Smallman is the kind of guy that is tough to read. If he can have even a smidge of the success he's had in juniors, he could easily slot in as a solid, scoring bottom six guy. But it all depends on how his gritty game translates.

I hope the boys call him Biggie.

I really hate that our pop culture references die on the vine as we get older, because that would have been a slam dunk ten years ago.

As for Smallman, he's a good little player. I don't know what to expect, because he reminds me a bit of Clark Bishop and that hasn't gone so well for Clark Bishop, but optimism reigns.

Even in the Q, Bishop wasn't producing much.

Funny related story, I once asked a high school class of mine about Oprah 2 or 3 years ago and only one kid in 27 knew who she was. MC Hammer was a flat zero.

I know I've posted this before, but it still makes me laugh. An at the time 18 year old Freshman I used to tutor a year or two ago overheard me and a friend talking about retro gaming and came over and said "I love retro games. You mean like Game Cube right?"

Was about to say this. At least Smallman has put up some pretty good numbers, they look a bit better than Bishop's.

Bishop never had the skill or offense that Smallman does. He's got a nice set of hands and a pretty quick release. He plays in all situations and isn't afraid to stick up for teammates.

Contract is up after this season. Anything to suggest he is re-signed or is it more likely he signs an AHL deal?

Truly hard to say. He just hasn't been able to stay on the ice much since turning pro. Seems like he could be decent AHL fodder, but he could be the type of guy that slips through the cracks for a more reliable AHL veteran if this move to Chicago ever becomes finalized.

He spent a portion of the last contract playing in the ECHL, suffered a serious shoulder injury, and hasn't put up numbers in the A. Seems an NHL future is looking pretty unlikely.

The Canes may still want to keep him around to help the AHL club, but I suspect they would rather do that by having him on an AHL contract rather than re-signing him. Guys who can play a bottom-6 type game with a little bit of skill are still viable assets for recall in a pinch, but Smallman hasn't shown a level of production that typically leads to a contract renewal.
