Yep. They were decent longer than I thought. Fair enough.

That all ended with talk of higher ups interfering didn’t it?
Weird.
It did and that’s why he insisted he get the POHO title here so he could avoid that. I guess Chiarelli believed that title would prevent meddling from above in this organization.

Nobody else is going to believe it will now. That’s what the problem is here. I don’t care if Chiarelli is GM here or not. I agree he hasn’t done a good job and needs to be held accountable. My issue is the meddling will prevent this team from hiring a good replacement meaning we’re stuck with Tambellini and Mactavish types. Spector’s article is irrelevant. The NHL community is small. If it’s going on they all know about it even if the public didn’t.

If they didn't, then they do now.

Folks, we've been talking about these same issues at least 12 years. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Yep, the worst run organization in pro sports!

Man, I had a nightmare that it was mid April and snowing heavily and the Oilers were out of the playoffs and the only thing worse than some of their management was the rest of their management. I'm sure I'll wake up some year though

Oilers Upper Hierarchy Needs to be Better

Gregor recaps what a disaster management/coaching has been since Katz bought the team.
Adding Paul Coffey to the staff in January, only to have him on the ice twice in 66 days, and once in the American league, made no sense. We don’t know if Coffey could have helped, because he wasn’t around enough, and from what I’m told some of the things he recommended weren’t put in place anyways. So what was the point of hiring him?

bizarre hiring to say the least

Sure don't feel a lick of optimism now for the next few years. Its like a crappy relationship where they just can't cut ties with their ex because they have a stanley cup kid together, it hangs on but it doesn't feel good.

It really just feels like we reset the decade of darkness.

I think the Old Boys perception made people think the position was way more significant than it was.

It sounds like he was watching video on the players, sending suggestions to the coaches and flying out to work with a few players every now and then.

For some reason people expected it to be a major coaching role that was supposed to turn around the season.

short term success? after they won the Cup they made it to another Cup final and won another President trophy
btw, the players he's picked are having an impact right now...Pastrnak and Krug are decent players

Are you just gonna ignore the five years of mediocrity before this year?

no one is saying that at all

it's strange cause Chia said they needed a skill coach, then hire Coffey...who does a half-ass job and only shows up twice on the ice

again, maybe Coffey could only be available for that amount of time...but then wouldn't it have been better to hire someone who's willing to put more work into it?

5 years ago the Bruins were in the Cup final
4 years ago they were winning the Presidents Cup
they've never won less then 41 games in a full season in 8 seasons

can we be "mediocre"? please?

So at this rate we should be sitting pretty by, oh, 2022.

Did he do a half-assed job or was his role far less significant than you're assuming?

It's pretty obvious it was a minor role with mostly remote consulting in mind. He was never meant to be there 24/7 and be on the ice for every practice.

Every now and then? From the sounds of it, it was three times in over two months. I can’t imagine why they would hire somebody and announce it publicly only for him to show up for work three times. If they were aware he was going to be around as rarely as he was then why bother announcing his hiring? Nobody would have even noticed. I’m guessing they expected more from him. It looks like Coffey was the guy I’d thought he be the day his hiring was announced. Somebody who was non committed and not much help at all. Worse than that, look at all the controversy it stirred. I wonder if they still think it was worth it.

I think Chia may have some drafting talent, based on the Boston guys. However, I don't trust him with his finger on the trade button. His record has not exactly been stellar in that department.

I hope your right on the drafting, but I'm not seeing it.

Here are Chia's draft's excluding 2006 since as that year was primarily the assistant GMs baby as Chia wasn't supposed to participate per the agreement with the Sens. Other than Seguin and Hamilton which were pretty easy to make picks there really isn't much of note until the 2014 draft. We can hope something clicked and his 2014 draft is replicated with the quality of the players still to come from 2015, 2016 etc (and there are positive arrows there), but 6 years of minimal impact drafting other that top ten picks doesn't give me a lot of confidence.
