Get Blake Wheeler off of PP1 update (among players with 20+ minutes):

Wheeler has been very effective this year. I really wanted him off the left half wall, because I didn't think he was well-utilized there (mostly because his shot is mediocre and he wasn't effective as a stationary playmaker. I really like how they use Wheeler now on the R half-wall now. He's much more active, and has been able to find passing seams.

Not only are the Lightning and Jets 1-2 in the standings. They're also 1-2 here

IMG_0211.jpg
Having a killer PP makes everything better. Teams will be reluctant to play an aggressive tight game so that they avoid taking penalties, and that opens things up for the Jets at 5v5.

Indeed. Notice the lack of 'noise'.

A bit on individual penalty rates. Tanev drawing a lot of penalties is unsurprising, as is Chiarot's position.

I don't really mind the Jets taking a lot of penalties as long as the PP is producing more goals than the PK is allowing. Teams that take lots of penalties tend to draw lots as well.

Anytime that combined magic number is over 100 Im happy. Our PK has been better the last while so I think we are trending in the right direction. Coaches have really made improvements in this area and that was the area I was most skepticle we'd see improvement.

PK has been much better at denying zone entries, that's been the area of improvement for me. They are doing a better job of not giving up the line and are supporting well on the chip play. They've been really stingy through the middle. Once the opposition sets up though, it's been much of the same clown car routine, relying on blocked shots and great goaltending.

Against the Isles it was a good thing Tavares basically whiffed on three straight one timers from the circle, they were grade A chances. Nuge should have scored on that back door play last night as well. A little luck goes a long way though, maybe it's just evening out at the moment.

New stuff from McCurdy. In general, these heatmaps just confirm the eye test: our PP is all over the place, but the sweet spots of Laine, Trouba and Wheeler are clearly visible. The PK, on the other hand, allows an unholy amount of shots from the points, but manages to keep the net front somewhat under control.

Interesting stuff. I was just looking at it on hockeyviz.com.

Don't think Wheeler really has a "sweet spot".

Individual shooting percentage on the PP, Jets forwards 2017/18:

Perreault 42.9
Ehlers 30.0
Scheifele 26.1
Lowry 25.0
Laine 22.9
Connor 12.5
Wheeler 11.1
Little 10.0

Perreault's shooting percentage is tempered by the fact that only about 29% of his shot attempts hit the net, so he misses the net a lot and/0r has a lot of his shots blocked.

Dellow is suggesting that this is our weakest link. Kind of fits the eye test also. It would be interesting to see what sort of quality those shot attempts are. I do find it interesting that he is comparing the Winnipeg Jets to a Death Star though.

Dellow dives into some PK analytics in this piece. When he talks about the Jets he finds some very unusual stats involving Hendricks and Tanev. Getting killed on shot attempts after a DZL but not allowing many goals against. Very interesting stuff.

Thanks for sharing this. Matches eye test really. I need to get me a subscription one of these days.

It's good to have Lowry back :)

Can't believe the turn around in special teams this season vs last season, 106.9 after 50 games is a crazy number.

The way Hendricks and Tanev are getting creamed in their own zone on the PK, it's obviously not them not allowing many goals against. It's the goalies, as Dellow points out with his comment on the .982 and .977 save percentages. Those are unreal numbers for PK goaltending. Imagine how reality would bite Hendricks and Tanev if Pavelec were in net.

You can say that if you want but there is a massive difference between a shot a goalie sees and a cross seam pass for a 1 timer that a goalie has a lower percentage on. I would like to see where the shots are coming from and if there is more high danger shots.

Dellow did a bit of this on twitter. It seems Hendricks is limiting HDSC quite a bit while Tanev not so much.
