10: I would have taken the trade that Arizona accepted from Philadelphia and gone with one of Boldy, Pod, Caufield, or Newhook, in that order. I had reasonably similar grades on all 4 of them so it would have been a no brainer if Arizona were locked in on Soderstrom. Even if they weren't I still liked the value, as worst case scenario I end up with Soderstrom/Krebs and an extra 2nd.

40: Hoglander

45: Matthew Robertson

71: Puistola

Can't speak knowledgeably past this point.

Agreed that the ideally we take that Arizona trade, pick up the extra 2nd, and take one of Pod, Kaliyev or Caufield at 14. Kaliyev would be my second choice at 10; there must be some serious background shit for him to fall so far.

I think this was honestly the toughest "think you can draft" i've done. Weird draft in a few ways. My top pick has a potentially serious injury just before the draft that i don't really know anything about. Almost tempted to go with Boldy at 10 as the "easy out", but hey...it's house money, let it ride i guess.

Biggest thing was just having about a hundred and fifty late round picks, in a year that i felt really dropped off hard after ~the second round/early third. Just didn't feel like i had as many later round guys i had strong convictions on this year. Just kind of a collection of guys i like a bit, a bunch of whom ended up undrafted.

Should probably be noted for future reference, that i would've been up all night after round 1 absolutely banging the table, if not jumping up on it and raving like a lunatic, trying to find a trade partner to move up a handful of spots toward the top of the 2nd from #40 to get Raphael Lavoie. Whatever that might've taken. But kind of a moot point given the trade that happened.

Probably should've thrown a goaltender in there, and Tampa grabbed the guy i really liked in Hugo Alnelfelt with that 71st pick we dealt them. But ehhh...

At the time of the draft I was hoping one of Podkolzin or Caufield would be available at our spot. Krebs was basically tied at the top there too; reminding me of a stronger version of Konecny (who I was also very high on). But with his late serious injury he dropped just below the other two. The other guy I was very high on that I thought would be there was Seider but that became moot.

In the second round I was hoping Korczak might drop to us. So I would have taken him, having known nothing about Hoglander. Although Hoglander looks like an absolutely excellent pick, with all kinds of upside, especially because I assume Gradin had a hand in scouting him.

So my final draft list, for who was available looked something like
Podkolzin/Caufield
Korczak

I don't usually follow the draft that much but I always like these threads, they're fun to look back on. The only thing that bugs me though is how fair the whole premise is, since everyone already knows who ended up getting drafted in which rounds before they post their own picks here. If I'm not mistaken, that's what most/all the posters are doing?

This would be a fun and slightly more realistic exercise I'd love to see for next year: post the player you would draft right before the Canucks actually make their pick in real-time. This is so nobody has the benefit of hindsight of knowing. Thus, if the player you want next gets taken before our next pick obviously your next choice will be different.

Thoughts?

They kind of already do that in the live thread... anyone online and with an opinion is usually making their opinion heard as soon as it’s our pick....or for 10-15 picks prior.....
just tune in there.

This thread allows for a 24 hr grace period of retrospective research of reaction prior to locking in...

End of the day... let’s be serious... no one here has clue. They would be relying on information leaked purely from the people paid thousands sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars to do their job.. plus general ranking systems.

People here don’t know sh!t.

I'm gonna..
I'll just do the first two because I didn't get to see many of the players past the 2nd round range this year.

1st (10th overall): Alex Newhook
2nd (40th): Nils Hoglander

Oh, with the traded away 3rd pick, I think Patrik Puistola is going to be a steal where he was selected, so he would have been my pick with it.

Guys like Plasek and Silovs are complete unknowns to me, I don't watch those leagues so it's hard to take them.

1st round: Cole Cauflied (Completely fine with Pod, but had Caufield at 5 or 6)
2nd round: Brett Leason
3rd round: Mikko Kokkonen / Pavel Dorofeyev (no trade)
4th round: Marshall Warren

That's all I'm comfortable with.

Going to second this one. Seems to line up with what I would have went with.
