Mr. Smid.

You will be introduced to Mr. Peluso at a time and place to be determined.

Doubtful.
It's more likely that Peluso tries to engage him, and someone comes to Smid's aid.
I'm not saying that doesn't send a message though.
Having someone like Peluso trying to go with you, might make you more conscious of boarding Jets.

Anyone not willing to fight a talentless goon isn't going to concerned about hitting another player
Dressing a enforcer isn't much of a deferent.
Does anyone think that Thorburn, Stuart, or even Kane wouldn't have fought Smed if he had been willing?

Peluso goes after Smid then Mackentyre jumps bogosian and starts a line brawl.

Hit wad definitely dirty but don't think it was bad enough that anyone's gonna be looking to kill smid next time they play.

I'm not sure there was an opportunity that made sense.
Kane took a stride or two towards him, but why negate a power play?
After that it's a one goal game. Not the time to settle a score.

So what you are saying is that having Peluso in the lineup wouldn't have mattered because the Jets couldn't afford a instigator.

I'm saying that a good "enforcer" also understands context.

As the game played out, no having Peluso wouldn't have mattered. However if we don't cut the lead, I think Peluso would/should have words with Smid.

I'd rather have a guy who can skate, shoot, and understands hockey.

Doesn't mean that Peluso won't try to have words with Smid next time these two teams meet.

Where was our punching bag (Thorburn) after the Smid cheap shot on Scheff? Really don't know what Thorburn brings to the team any more, can't fight, can't play hockey.

Sitting on the bench, the EXACT same place Peluso would be.

Fighters are pointless. So very pointless. Don't get it. A skilled player like Smid has nothing to fear from a goon or grinder like Thorburn or Peluso. This isn't the 70's, nobody is charging off the bench to even the scores, and no coach will accept a goon going out there later and taking penalties to "even the score", hell why would a fan even want them to, it HURTS the team.

It sounds like people wanted someone to go out and do this.

This is when "payback" on players not willing to fight disappeared from the game.

A better question would be....WHERE WAS THE RETRIBUTION!

I will spell out the retribution for you.

5 - 4 Jets

Even if Smid had gotten an Evander Kane 1 punch, It's the win that Mark cares about, not who goes to bat for him.

Winning is always the best retribution.

Weird fact:

Taking all the fights last season in the NHL that are clear wins according to HockeyFights.com...
The team with the loser in the fight was more likely to score a goal in the next few minutes than the winner.........

So maybe Thorburn is useful!

That seems like super time consuming stat to come up with

Here's my explanation for that:

Lets say Player A levels Player B. This happens because A physical player, while B is either less physical or not prepared to be hit.

Player C see's this occur. Player C feels that he needs to do something, because Player A just took a liberty with Player B (and everyone love player B, obviously). Player A and C fight. A whoops C, because C isn't really a fighter, he's a guy that saw something unacceptable and answered the bell.

Who gets the bigger boost?
I argue Player C's team is all jazzed up from seeing a teammate stick up for another despite the fact its not players C's role.
Player A's team is happy, but Player A is big dude, and C is kinda a *****. So no real win one for the gipper moment there.

And that is my best attempt to rationalize your stat, given that I'm a fan of Peluso and any information that prohibits me from potentially seeing him is my Kryptonite. :)

Once again, statistical evidence of Coach Noel's counter-intuitive genius.

LOL I was just being goofy.

Problem with that logic is near 90% of fights in the NHL is between two willing "fighting specialists" (ie: enforcers)... so while that could occur occasionally, it wouldn't be the main force in the outcomes.

The truth is it was only 47% GF% when winning a fight so with sampling you can see how it is likely supposed to be 50%, just like shot shot metrics indicate...

Basically: after a fight either both teams gain equally in momentum, but if one does, it's quite random and has nothing to do with winning/losing... at least as far as goals and shots are conserned... which is what matters lol.

I saw the hit and as a Jets fan I didn't like that it was Sheifle or the position the hit put him in. As an Oilers fan I can't totally blame Smid because he initiated the hit shoulder on shoulder and Sheifle turned at the last minute and fell into the boards awkardly, likely just rookie jitters.
