Um, ok? I thought this was about LaBanc

Can't tell if deliberately obtuse or just dumb, so I'll explain... When you have those players (who all excel in 5 on 5), you can afford to have a player like LaBanc who is more of a powerplay specialist, with the hopes he improves his 5 on 5 play. At the very least he gives you a valuable skillset not on the roster currently, while having his weaknesses lessened by the strong 5 on 5 players surrounding him.

You know... my eyebrows raised when I saw this deal. But here’s the thing, unless he sustains a career ender, he’s gonna make out well next summer. We can’t look into a person’s head and determine their motivation. Maybe he prides himself in being a minimalist

Labanc signed one-year contract to boost Sharks' quest for Cup
"I saw the guys that were leaving (San Jose) ... so I knew there'd be more ice time for myself," Labanc said. "At the same time I knew that the team's (NHL salary) cap was really tight. I didn't want to take away most of that cap (space) and lose one or two guys that could potentially be on the team, that Doug Wilson would want. We have a great team, a good Stanley Cup contender this year again. I'm betting on myself right now. I know I'm going to put the boots on and go to work."

For those still looking for the answer to why.

Why would that be needed? :dunno:

Are there some people out there who think he was forced to sign with a gun to his head?
No but if my job payed me 60k a year to do what I do I'd get a phone call from the IRS. Simply put, this contract has shady written all over it.

It's a one year RFA deal. Lower salary this year to break the bank afterwards. Also if he took more money he probably get to play with forward scrubs due to all the money committed to the back end.

This. It's not like it's a 7-year, $7 mil deal.

One year deal, most likely he'll get a substantial raise next summer.

Pretty sure the Sens did the same thing with Alfredsson - only they reneged on the agreement and lowballed him. Could be wrong on that but it's what I remember hearing.

He won't get paid. He is a modern day Czerkawski, he can put up points but nothing else at all.

He'll get his multi-year 5-6 millions a year contract.
I think he gets moved at the deadline if San Jose is at risk of not making the playoffs. Cap hit is ideal for a team willing to go all in. Labanc played himself, if everything on the surface is what it seems. Actually even if it isn't he still played himself.

If he gets moved at the deadline, then a player would never sign with San Jose again. There is no risk of not making the playoffs and Labanc will be a shark for a long time

That's absurd. Teams going all in only need to consider a low percentage of the cap hit anyways due to most of the year having gone by. If you traded a 10 million dollar player at the trade deadline, the team Receiving him only has to worry about a fraction of that being added to caphit. Something like 2.5 million. and that is an extreme example.

Setoguci was a sign and trade and SJ has signed many contracts since then.

I'm thinking closer to 4 unless he takes a big step, not in points but in his game
He really just is a PP specialist at the moment. Although in junior he was one of the best PKers in the OHL, and I'm pretty sure lead the league in points, so he has a lot of room to grow into.

Setoguchi was done a favor by DW signing that contract since it put him straight to UFA. If Seto had played his cards right, he would've gotten his big deal as soon as he could have but he messed it up.
