You've got to hope your prospects don't have a loser's attitude.

If my choices are to stay at my current company with limited room for growth or go to a competitor with room for advancement...it's a no brainer, but for some reason we're supposed to look at it differently for sports because we as fans care about the crest on the front more than the name on the back.

Yeah...the "I'm going to make it...with you or someone else if you won't give me a shot" attitude doesn't exactly come off as a "loser attitude" to me.

That's really not the same scenario though. Simmonds is already at the top of his field [top-6 player on a team in the highest league in the world] so there is no true avenue for "advancement." His compensation is such that he has the rare opportunity to place significant value on the ancillary aspects of employment [location, culture, etc.].

Talking about Allison, not Simmonds.

thought this was why the college guys decided to stay in school and was told not to worry. these kids look at college the same as playing in the ahl except they are getting an education and have the option to stay and pick the team they want to sign with. here kid sign now so you can play in the ahl for us for the next 2 or 3 years or go back to school for 2 more years get a degree and pick a team you have a better chance to play in the nhl with. agents and players are starting to look long term just like the teams have to.

If they stay in school, they still have the 3 year ELC when they come out, so they're just postponing their earning years.
For the first couple years, college is a sheltered environment, but if you're a top prospect by your junior season it's time to go to the AHL and play a full schedule to accelerate your development.

Simmonds knows his closest comparable is Neal. JVR brings more talent to the table but Simmonds more intangibles like Neal. I'd do 3yr -17, 4yr-22 or 5yr at 25. Little bit of a hometown discount but fair based on injury history

8x2. A big fat thank you check that we can afford for a term we can work with. Never gonna happen tho.

If you can get him 4 years and under, I'd consider it.

The problem for him now is that he's a luxury with JVR in town now and about to hit the wrong side of 30. Let's hope he bounces back and we trade him for some good asset/assets (namely RHD).
Because we are used to having total garbage bottom six doesn't make Simmer a luxury though. And if you have JVR slide into hartnells slot that probably makes power play even more potent.

If simmonds would take a two year deal id make him the highest paid player on the team. With the team just starting to make its real push his deal is expiring. When your making a deep playoff run high character veterans are exactly what you look to add. I'd rather pay simmer tavares money on a short term deal than go over 5 years which is what he'll get on the open market. Its basically job well done wayne heres a boatload of cash and the chance to win or try and find a mercenary at the deadline when the best available will be Simmonds light. Realistically id think long and hard about 6x4 which is him doing us a favor but id probably let him walk at that price and term

His cap hit will likely be in the 6 - 6.5M range with 4 years of term.
If he wants more, sell him to the highest bidder!

With Patrick looking like he belongs on PP1 and dishing out 7mil for the next 5 years to JVR, Simmonds is redundant. Hextall would essentially be locking up a 3RW and PP specialist for big money and term when his on ice value (mainly PP) can easily be replaced in house.

He deserves his big pay day, just not from us.

What is interesting is that Simmonds plays such a crucial role in the leadership of the locker room. He supposedly plays the bad cop to Giroux good cop. Voracek nobody takes serious probably.

Hextall has mentioned it several time about his leadership qualities. It makes me think Hextall wouldn’t be thrilled with the makeup of the room if Simmonds does leave.

Simmonds also reminds me of one of those players that gets traded but the signs back here once the year is over. You trade Simmonds though you have s big hole on your 3rw spot. I think NAK will be in the 4th line to begin.

If he is re-signed, Hextall will more than likely move another top 9 forward out in a deal. He can’t have every top 9 winger spot road blocked for these prospects.

We now have 2 net front guys in JVR and Patrick who can replace Simmer on the PP. One lefty, one righty.

We all saw how ugly a declining Simmer was this year DESPITE his goals. Not pretty.

Hextall isn't going to worry about blocking a prospect who MIGHT be ready in a year or two.
First, go to the AHL and dominate, then Ron will worry about making room.

Let's not forget that Simmonds was banged up almost all season long, especiatlly at the end of it. He was not healthy. I doubt that he's slowing down, not yet, still in his prime years, just needs to stay healthy.

Summary of this message board:

Yay everyone who is young
Boo everyone who is old

You forgot to add:

If a player misses time due to injury, trade him asap
If a player tries to play through injury, trade him already
If a player hides an injury, go get the pitchforks
Don't you ever question Sam Morin - he is untouchable

I would trade Wayne. I would trade him somewhere that he would prefer to go, and I would not insult him with some of the low-ball offers that are being discussed in here. He's played under valued for too long and has been too loyal for that garbage. I understand not being able to pay him, but some of the alternatives in here are just greasy. This is the NHL, not the NFL.

Oh I agree. But it gave us a glimpse of what an older, more injured Simmonds could look like.

Even 100% healthy, Simmonds is poor at ES. So why would we lock in a poor ES player, to be on the 3rd line, AND give him big money?

As I said before, head over heart. I love Simmonds and appreciate what he has done. But I would not go over 2 years in a contract. I have faith that within 3 years, ONE of Allison, O'Brien, Laczynski, etc.... can be a 3rd line player. Not a crazy ask.
