Given the NHL has constant, unending cap issues, why not do the following:
For buyouts, allow players to be paid their signing bonuses at the time of buyout if the club chooses. This way a buyout like Vlasic’s below would be without those two years of huge cap hits. Players might go for it because they get paid up front cash at time of buyout that could be huge sums, GMs might go for it because they get lower cap hits for buying out contracts. It might cause agents to negotiate contracts as all signing bonuses, but isn’t that happening a lot anyways?
