The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed defenseman Mark Friedman, the club's 2014 third round draft pick (86th overall), to an entry-level contract for the 2017-18 season, according to GM Ron Hextall.

Additionally, Friedman will report to the club's American Hockey League affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, for the remainder of the 2016-17 season.

Friedman spent the last three seasons in the NCAA at Bowling Green State University of the WCHA. Below are some news & notes:

Here’s more on what Friedman thinks he brings to a team:

“I can bring offense and I can bring defense. I can be a power-play guy. I can be a penalty-kill guy. I can be trusted in all situations.â€

Friedman will have a lot of competition in the Flyers’ system, as he was the 10th defensemen they drafted in the last three years.
-------------------------------------------

Originally, Friedman was scheduled to begin his time with Bowling Green during the 2013-2014 year, but after a bit of a class credit related mix up, he played one more season with Waterloo.

Friedman attributes that extra year of junior hockey to his development as a player.

“I think I’ve become a more two way player,†Friedman said. “Before, I just relied more on my offense, and now I can really rely on my defense. I hope to bring a two way game.â€

Overall, Friedman is described as an offensive defenseman and compares his style of play to that of Chicago Blackhawk Johnny Oduya.

Excellent speed and highly mobile, Friedman is a superb puck mover. Great stride, low, wide base, he packs a ton of power with each stride and has an explosive burst. Moves the puck up ice through the neutral zone extremely well and is well suited for the power play.

Solid slap shot and a very quick, efficient wrist shot. Pucks find the net off of his stick. Very calm and comfortable with the puck. Great passer, especially on the stretch pass. Always tape to tape. High end offensive weapon on defense.

Mark is much more reliable defensively than the average offensive defenseman. Good hockey sense, smart, reads the play really well. Excellent anticipation. A cross ice pass in the neutral zone is virtually impossible when Friedman's on the ice.

Shot blocking machine. All around, just a great influence to have in your defensive zone. He has the ability to slow the game down and calm things down, never panicked or looking rushed.

Sounds like a really interesting pick. Not much missing other than size here.

Hockey Prospect ranked him 109

-Excellent skater. Explosive first few steps. Gets to top speed quickly
-Superb puck mover
-A high end offensive weapon as a dman
-Better than most offensive dmen in dzone
-Uses hockey sense to his advantage

-Size is an issue

This is so reminiscent of the Gostisbehere pick. Almost like a carbon copy.

USHL people I talked to earlier in year told me Mark Friedman was a guy to watch. Goes 3rd round to PHI. Very smart, and competes.

When has an undersized defensemen picked in the 3rd round by the Flyers ever being any good?

Terrible pick!

The last time we took a small, offensive defenseman in the 3rd round it worked. Can lightning strike twice? :dunno:

Sounds like a future 3rd pairing PP specialist that can block some shots too. :)
