^Keith and Seabrook were there picks and as much of a reason they are who they are as Kane and Towes.

True, I didn't go back that far. I was only contesting the notion that they never miss on picks (and yes, I realize he didn't mean "never" literally). Don't get me wrong, they definitely also made some good picks, especially in later rounds (Hjalmarsson, Brower, Buff, Wiz, etc...) but they missed on a lot of 1st and 2nd round picks at the time they were in the rebuild phase. Even when they got Keith in the 2nd round, their 1st round pick that season? Anton Babchuk.

I do agree with the rest of the post though. They stockpiled picks, made some shrewd moves and have been well run in recent years.

Not disputing you at all, just thought it should be said they drafted the 4 guys that made them what they are today. They made plenty of other moves to surround them with a very good supporting cast, that's for sure.

Yeah, no disagreement there. They also had a lot of success in later rounds, something foreign to us in Carolina. Of course, as Anton Dub stated, they stocked up on picks and had a lot of chances, but still, here are some examples:

Adam Burish: 9th round
Wisniewki: 5th round
Byfuglien: 8th round
Bouwer: 7th round
Hjalmarsson: 4th round
Ben Smith: 6th round
Marcus Kruger: 5th round

How do you think the Blackhawks won the Cup twice ? They tanked to get Kane and Toews.

Hawks never tanked

Wirtz didn't care about putting decent product on ice. Guy didn't even let us watch home games on TV

And Hawks had plenty of misses and a lot of luck at draft

Hawks got lucky Blues and Pens passed on Toews while Kane was a result of them winning lotto. Lotto bad luck is something Hawk fans got to understand when Hawks ended up falling from 2nd pick to 3rd pick as a result of lotto in 2004 missing out on Malkin!

Malkin lotto failing netted Hawks Cam Barker who was bust. Skille was a high bust (7th overall) and team passed on Kopitar at that draft while Beach is highest drafted player in nearly 20 years to never play an NHL game (Complete disaster of a pick)

You finished second to last the year before you drafted Toews. You finished 13th the year before you drafted Kane. If that's not tanking, then I don't know what to say.

Its call mismanagement

At one time the Hawks future was supposed to be

Mark Bell
Kyle Calder
Tyler Arnason
Tuomo Ruutu
Steve McCarthy
Anton Babchuk
Pavel Vorobiev
Mikhail Yakubov
Adam Munro
Michael Leighton
Craig Anderson

^
That was considered the future of Hawks organization

The ABC line (Arnason , Bell and Calder) was once the top line in Chicago for several years

The Hawks didn't tank. Teams go through suck. The Hawks did a good job of stockpiling picks and generally drafted well, and struck gold with the high picks. I don't think edm is tanking and they've done the same thing for five years.

The notion that any team that accepts the suck, trades off whatever pieces they can and starts over is auto tanking is hf gold.

Well back to the topic at hand....do we pick up anybody on the waiver wire, sign a UFA, or trade. I actually have no problem trading picks for young up and comers. A while back I promoted the thought of trading for Josh Bailey (not sure that he would be available any more). But I would easily trade picks (2nd rounders?) and a mid-level prospect for a player like Bailey. He's young, can play up and down lines (2nd and 3rd), is somewhat physical, and has scoring acumen. At 25 he's still got many years in front of him...and we don't have to rely on what has proven to be a weak developmental system.

Clearly, I'd try my best to move one of Harrison, Bellemore (who I'd like to keep), and Gleason (who nobody will likely take). But that, too, would likely take packaging a prospect or pick to get anything worthwhile in return. Giving Penner or Leino whirl is also an option as we actually have almost $4 million in cap space....more when Jordan goes on LTIR.

So I feel that options abound. We will no doubt give a youngster or two the opportunity for "trial by fire" and we may be surprised. Regardless, all is not lost and there's still a lot of good that can come from this season, up to and including sneaking into the playoffs. And yes, this is me maintaining the "optimist" mantle.

I'd watch the waiver wire first, but yeah I don't think we're done here. Montreal's trying to offload Moen, and the Rangers apparently may be moving Stempniak. Toronto's trying to offload Ashton as well, but I'd prefer the first two options.

That is, if we don't make a waiver claim first.

I'm not sure how much Moen has left, but that's exactly the type of player the Canes bottom 6 needs right now.

mueller is on waivers again

anders lee got sent down to bridgeport, meaning their depth is solid, a trade for either him or bailey would fill the 3rd line center issue

Pick up cheap pieces to get through the year. When the deadline comes, trade all the high-end talent you can -- what there is of it. Cut salary to the floor and stay there the next 2-3 years. Draft and develop high-end talent. Buy vets at the deadline the first year we're in the mix. Back to the playoffs in 2017.

We should not sign a player. Use depth from Charlotte and focus on player developement and the draft. Get a trade deadline plan together and see if E. Staal has any value at all.

E. Staal to Edmonton will make sense if Leon Draisaitl is struggling but the Oilers are looking like a playoff team. Am I saying Draisatl to Carolina? I am. Not likly but dreamable.
