Should we have Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year awards?

I was reading the Caldar discussion, and a number of comments referencing Aaron Ekblad's lesser chance of winning ROTY because of his position, and I wondered if the league would ever consider breaking the rookie award up to give more exposure to more players.

We have top forward and top defenseman awards, why not have offensive and defensive rookies of the year.

But what about goalies?

I mean, I guess it's a nice thought, but I don't think it matters enough to change it. Dmen can win the award, as can goalies. Hell, defenders/goalies probably win the Calder more than they win the Hart.

There wouldn't be any issue if the voters were competent and able to properly evaluate players.

There are enough awards. Let's not make the NHL a league full of participation ribbons.

Would end up with a #5/#6 Sheltered PP Specialist Dman who puts up 30-45 points winning the Dman award, while a winger facing weak competition and thriving in an offense heavy situation (High-End Linemates/PP/OZS) would win the FWD one.

Every once in awhile you'd have a great all-around player like Ekblad win, but the winners would be garbage most of the time.

Whoever scores the most points wins...unless he's Russian. .

Trying to make yourself feel better already for when Ekblad doesn't win it?

The Calder voting has been pretty good the last number of years. The deserving players have won it every year for at least the past 5 years now.

Forsberg will win it this year because he deserves to win it. If Ekblad were having the best rookie season, he would win it.
