Should this season just be considered a write off for the Coyotes?

Is it worth pointing out that they aren't really out of the playoff picture right now? The middle is very mushy in the Western Conference.

You guys realize that the coyotes were already above the cap floor before acquiring the Pronger and Datsyuk contracts right? Because you’re coming off as extremely ignorant right now.

As per Cap Friendly:

Forwards: $23,894,166
Defense: $18,950,000
Goalies: $3,375,833
IR: $25,326,667 - Hossa and Bolland's deals = $14,551,667

Total: $60,771,666
On-Ice total: $46,219,999
Cap floor: $58,800,000

Assuming a healthy 23 man roster with Demers, Raanta, Grabner, Richardson, Schmaltz, and Dvorak back in the lineup, if we assume the player they're replacing is the cheapest player at their position, we get the following:

Forwards: $27,268, 647
Defense: $22,237,500
Goalies: $6,900,000

Total: $56,406, 147

The best case scenario without the Hossa/Bolland contracts, retention, and buyout overages is over 1.5 million under the cap floor for your most expensive possible 23-man roster that will be on the ice.

Again this is for this year, not even counting the Pronger/Datsyuk days. The Coyotes need help reaching the cap floor.

They've finished bottom 3 in 3 of the last 4 seasons and only have one top 3 pick to show for it, which they traded. Arizona is probably the one team where the draft lottery has really hurt their progress. Moving that top 7 pick for Stepan and Raanta was a bad move. They could have snagged Andersson or Mittlestadt with it. Obviously missing out on McDavid and Eichel was a big blow too. And then not even getting into the top 3 last year was a blow as well. They really need to learn how to just tank and grab themselves a capable center prospect.

But the Oilers have won 5 1st overall picks including the best player in the world and are a whopping 4 points ahead of the Coyotes (and the Coyotes have a game in hand). After all that luck the Oilers only depth player is a player on a PTO? No team has done less with more than the Oilers.
The 3 first overall picks they had weren’t great top picks. Nuge, Hall and Yak. None of these guys is the best player from their draft and one is maybe the worst first 1st overall pick ever. It’s not like the yotes haven’t had their share of high picks not pan out there the most recent example being Strome.

I truly thing they are in playoffs next season. Despite what everyone thinks they do have a good roster just a lot of main pieces out. They are also fun to watch. I’d definitely root for them in playoffs

They are the Carolina of the west
Team is expected to turn a corner every year and they dont yet prediction never seems to change.
Wrong. No matter how much Carolina spins its wheels, it'll always have the 2006 Cup and no one can take it away, no matter how much it may drive some people crazy.

They already tried downtown Phoenix
In an arena where about 2,000 seats couldn't see the play once it got down to that end past about the faceoff dots. Not to mention, the lease that the Coyotes had there was pretty damn crappy for the team. At this point, the Suns finally admit the arena needs major upgrades just for the NBA side of things, but everyone seems committed to a rehab instead of a new arena which could host hockey and basketball and get the Coyotes back toward downtown.

Thanks for the list! Wilson should count though, he’s a top 9 player on our terrible team. Was waived since he’s been injured for so long and we have 11 days without games coming up.

Since he was waived before playing a game I cannot call him an NHL player for this season. That's why
Forsling's wrist inury for Chicago doesn't count whereas his 2nd injury does.

Seriously when have the coyotes been relevant
If you want to fully go down that road, when has the game of hockey made any sense as an important human activity?

So maybe cut the smaller franchises some slack. We're all having fun. That's the most you can ask for.

Add OEL to that list as he went back to AZ to get an MRI while the team is playing in Montreal.

Dvorak, OEL, Schmaltz, Demers, Grabner, and Raanta are currently out, that's our 1C 2/3C, 1D, top-4 D, and our starting goalie. Not to mention chickenrun and Chucky missing the start of the season and Hino being out for a month or so. Pretty f***en wild.

I don't agree.. Canes have been a mediocre team for years that always seem to get at least somewhat close but never make it.

Coyotes have flat out stunk. Haven't had any young stars besides OEL. No real identity, at least one that works. Watching that team under defensive minded coach Tippett was a mess.

The toughest thing to do when you're at the bottom is to find an identity and the confidence that you can beat any team on any given night. I would say the Coyotes have found both of those things. Under RT they're a fast skating team that pressures you hard but they're also capable of defending well. It all started in the 2nd half last year.

Now it's just about having a good enough roster to turn that into results. But that's where luck plays a part as well. .500 team at the 50 game mark with all the injuries they've had is pretty to close to max that they should be capable of to this point in the season.

This is why it's key to see them healthy. With any logic, their healthy squad should be able to stay above .500 and at that point you can realistically compete for a playoff spot.

Personally i hate when people don't see this. They've clearly took big steps and not just spinning their wheels. This is where you get the true feel like they're building something.

I've liked most moves Chayka has made and people don't give credit until they see results - understandably so - but nobody should be surprised if this team suddenly makes the playoffs sooner rather than later. They just need some luck at this point but as long as you stick with something that clearly works, it'll turn around eventually. And i would say the Yotes are in this spot.

Marner has been pretty healthy, probably should have went with him instead of Strome a few years ago. Honestly Arizona should worry about their scouting and development before strength and conditioning. Not even trying to hate on them, but injuries really aren't their problem, they should be better then they are.
