Should the NHL cross-promote with UFC?

the heart of it
In the middle of the Stanley Cup Finals, UFC 131 is in Vancouver at Roger's Arena for Friday June 10th, and Saturday June 11th. This will be around the time of just before or after Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Do you think the NHL should use the opportunity to cross-promote between the two events?

how exactly? I don't see anyway that is effective, especially for the UFC.

Nope

UFC is a joke ,, A sport were guys punch people who are unconscious laying on ground makes no sense.

Not really. Boxing is a joke because they allow people to get up from concussions as long as they beat a 10 count. In the NHL if you get concussed you have to sit in a room for 15 minutes. And you can go back to work whenever you get cleared. You get knocked out in MMA and no commission in North America will allow you to fight for 60 days and you need a CAT scan before you can return.

I'm a big fan of both MMA and hockey and know people that do both of those sports professionally. Both sports are dangerous in their own right, but if you look at statistics hockey is a much more dangerous sport as far as serious injury is concerned.

I watched an MNA fight in which the guy was knocked out and still getting punched in head ,,, The guy was out cold yet the other fighter was still punching him

That is not a something the NHL should want to be affiliated with IMO

That was a result of a terrible ref then. At most a fighter should only be able to get off one extra punch if the ref is really on the ball. It's not something that even MMA fans are into. Message boards erupt every time something like that happens and people write emails to the commission about it.

I agree with you however that this is not the time for the UFC and NHL to make any kind of partnership. MMA is a young sport that does suffer from a lack of knowledge with it's officials (judges especially and ref's in smaller regions). But trust me, it's become a million times safer because of the regulations that Dana White and Zuffa and the commissions around the US and Canada have come up with.

There is a joke somewhere here about fighting in the NHL and the UFC, but it's too late for me to nail it... anyone want to take a stab at it?

No joke, I think that's viewers the NHL should try to get, UFC is the fastest growing sport, young men these days plays violent and imaginative video games, watch UFC and wrestling. The NHL should market to these guys and say screw the nerds and people that wants hockey to become like International hockey.

This idea seems familiar. Now where have I heard something similar before...?

Oh yeah....

http://www.ticats.ca/article/tiger-cats-team-up-with-ufc-star-mark-hominick

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced today that the team has entered a partnership with UFC featherweight athlete Mark Hominick.

Hominick, the #1 contender for the featherweight title, will take on current champion Jose Aldo at UFC 129 on April 30 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. Hominick, a Thamesford, Ontario native who fights out of London, has put together a 20-8-0 record throughout his mixed martial arts (MMA) career.

“I am very excited about this partnership with the Tiger-Cats,†said Hominick. “I can’t wait to enter the octagon, in Canada, with millions of CFL and Ticats fans cheering me on. I am grateful for the Ticats support and look forward to representing the black and gold with pride.â€

One does not have to like the sport to recognize how huge the sport has become. One just has to look at the UFC 129 event above and see how big it was and how it easily dwarfed the "Bills in Toronto" NFL experience.

Cross promotion could include teams sponsoring individual fighters or the NHL sponsoring events. I would think it would certainly help some teams in some of the awareness impaired parts of the US.

The reason why a fighter would punch another fighter after he's knocked out is that you're taught to keep going until the ref stops you.

This isn't some schoolyard fight where one fighter just toys with the other. Either of the fighters in the octagon are capable of delivering devastating blows that can end a match.

If I knock a guy on his back, I don't know if he's out. I need to finish the fight asap so that he doesn't have a chance to get back up and knock me out.

By and large the refs are incredibly good at jumping in right away on a knock out and are also very good at stopping fights where one fighter becomes defenseless, but still conscious, on the mat (like can happen in either guard or mount)

UFC isn't a sport of hooligans simply attempting to kick each other in the face. Virtually every fighter hold a black belt or some advanced degree in any one of a dozen martial arts. Several elite fighters can be considered a world class expert in multiple different martial arts disciplines

I really like UFC (sometimes), there's something increadibly awesome in an American Greco-Roman wrestler fighting against a Japanese Karate Black Belt and getting knocked out by a lightning fast series of Karate Chops followed by an impossible flying Matrix like kick when he tries to grapple the Karate Master.

Who would have tough that the movie Bloodsport would be real one day?

And did you know former NHL Enforcer Donald Brashear Is figting June 4 in a professional MMA fight card?

It'll be weird, I wonder how the "Hockey enforcer" fighting style will go against Karate, or Wrestling, or Jiu-Jitsu......

Any kind of cross-promotion is good. I'm not a UFC fan but I respect its popularity and the fact that it has basically flanked and conquered both boxing and pro wrestling in a very short timespan.

At the very least, they could cooperate on an ad campaign in Vancouver ("Finals Week" or something) to get the locals hyped up even more. Perhaps there are some UFC fans who resent the attention given to the NHL Finals -- invite them to join the party.

I'm a huge fan of both hockey and MMA, and some people in this thread need to get themselves at least some cursory education on what MMA is all about.

...having said that, cross-promotion would be good for both sports. Both are heavily dependent on their gate revenue, and regularly share venues. I'm not sure much can be done with UFC 131 right around the corner, but I could see something happening in the future if MMA keeps proving itself as a legitimate and potentially mainstream sports attraction.

If it was a regular season game and GSP was maineventing then I don't see an issue with him dropping the puck or something. Or having the Canucks ringside.

The NHL shouldn't be giving anyone attention during the cup finals.

I already thought the two were related, with the way everyone throws elbows to the head in this league. Hell, I thought the UFC was a spinoff of the NHL in an attempt to provide an arena where nonsense like that was legal.
