Should refs be allowed to give penalties because a coach or player yelled at them?

Umps in baseball probably get the worst of it when a coach flips out. They go nose to nose with them, spitting on them, kicking dirt on them etc. Now tell me this. What if they weren't allowed to throw coaches and players out of the game? How would they get them to leave? There need to be rules in place and that's why every ref in every major sport can call a penalty/foul, throw someone out of a game etc.

"...I've never seen Crash so angry and frankly, Bull fans, he used a certain word that's a no-no with umpires..."

About time someone stood up to noted arrogant hothead Ted Nolan for clapping encouragement to his team to shake off a goal against.

What a monster.

I think we saw how to handle the refs in the Cowboys Lions game and that's comeout onto the field of play from the bench and hell at them. Hell they'll even reverse the call.

Yeah, I hear how bad basketball refs are and see how bad football officiating has gotten. Sometimes just need to step back and realize the NHL maybe isn't really all that bad :help:

Some people on here just have no idea what officiating hockey is like. Period.

That pretty much sums up this topic.

Sometimes I wonder how many people here have experienced any organized sport at field level, as ref or player or even just as a fan. These "interpretations" of how refs interact with players and coaches are miles from reality.

Of course. The refs are given the exclusive authority to enforce the rules during games, and the coaches and players shouldn't be allowed to question that authority without the threat of punishment.

I feel like most refs let a lot of that crap go before they actually call an unsportsmanlike or a bench minor. Typically give a couple warnings as well.

Basically if you get called for yelling at an official you either crossed a line or were tot emotional and stupid to control yourself.

One area that I think is handled fine

Yep, if players or coaches lose their composure they hurt their chances of winning. I don't give a **** about the refs' feelings, they're not more important than the game. The players need to decide the final score, not the referees.

The issue is with this line of thinking. The refs aren't deciding the game, the player or coach that broke the rules are "deciding" the game.
