Should Gretzky's "records" have an asterisk?

aw guys, quit being such mindless sheep.

Chooch has it on good authority (his own) that Wayne Gretzky is the worst human being ever.

It all began one spring morning in 1987...

When I opened this thread I was sure it was going to be something like "There should be two sets of records, one of them for everyone who didn't play with a bodyguard". That's usually one of Chooch's standard lines.

I just dont see the value in most left handed shot goals in a period in the all star game when you are 20% ahead of everyone in history in even strength goals against.

I mean thats just pathetic.

Thats the equivalent of Bonds striking out more than anyone else or hitting more homers in 5000 more at bats or Schumacher taking 200 races to beat Sennas pole record or crashing more than anyone in history.

Everything else is meaningless when you play hockey like that. Not to mention in a weak West with no D and a bodyguard to boot. And never drawing one single slashing penalty in 19 years because you'd get guillotined if you hit him.

I tell you: guys I played with on the rinks would never have picked 99 to play on their side. Someone would have come and said : "get your *** back for once!"

Thanks chooch, but we don't want to hear any more details about the guys you played with.

That has to be the most Pejorative Slured thing i have ever heard, seriously. No one would ever pick Gretzky to play on their team? Let's just forget all his goals and points and just focus on ''getting his *** back?''

Can someone ban this guy?

Its funny no one can have an intelligent, well-thought out debate about 99 without you guys coming out of the woodwork to bring down the thread.

His playoff records were set against Chicago and other loser West teams.
Saying he beat the MapleLosers in 93 or something doesnt add much. He disappeared in the finals against the Habs and only resurfaced with his pathos filled "I may retire" speech.

Here's a quarter, call Omopogo.

From the HFBoards FAQ:

And this is all this guy ever does. What does it take, mods?

What happened to your 1971 tapes of the Habs Bruins series that you said you had????

That may be true.

Unfortunately, until someone actually brings forward such a debate, we'll never know.

What is there to debate, your psychosis?

Gretzky schooled the Habs and Lafleur in only his second year in the league, go look it up.

A player like Wayne (yeah I think we woudl have taken an NHLer) who stood next to the other goalie all game and woudlnt take a hit.

There were guys alike that once in a while. They eventually took up figure skating.
Yeah, he pretty much cherry picked in front of the net his whole life. The only reason he got all those assists was because he would shoot from like a foot out and then Jarri Kurri would come and bang the rebound home. Gretzky should have never been in an all-star game IMO. :sarcasm:

Yeah, all his playoff records were set because he played the crappy playoff teams. It's his fault that he carried his team to a number 1 playoff seed every year and they played the worst team from the West in the first round of the playoffs.

Chooch, your posts have so much stunning insignt.

Chooch, it sounds like you would like my neighbour.

He is convinced there was a league-wide conspiracy, involving everyone from management to on ice officials, that Gretzky was not allowed to be hit.

Apparently, he had free range of the ice and anyone who hit him got in trouble. The rookie Leafs player who cranked Gretzky at the blueline, and never played again is his favorite point to support his argument.

In a game that had already seen the likes of Guy Lafleur, Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Bobby Hull, and Gordie Howe, along comes Wayne Gretzky, who still took the game to another level. A level Lemieux almost matched, but not quite.

I'd like to meet that guy - maybe he knows something. ;)

As for the Habs v. Oilers in 81 - Yeah I remember it 25 years later; Moog stole the series and Messier deflated the Habs with his stick in Robinsons face and Larry refused to fight him. Hunter crushed Lafleur with a check at the Forum too.

Yeah I remember 99 in that series too; he scored when it was 5-1 in the last minute of the last game and started skipping around the ice whooping it up like he won the series for Edmonton (even as a kid I had a code and respected the players who never raised their sticks or did what 99 did).

He was a non factor except to desecrate the memory of Orr, Lafleur and Lemiuex, Yzerman who woudl never do that.

Of course they should have an asterisk. Don't you all know that Gretzky was on steroids his entire career??? :sarcasm:

I think that is what makes Gretzky so great - he somehow picked up 9 points in a 3 game series while being a non-factor. :sarcasm:

It was tough for him to make a difference being in Lafleur's back pocket. ;)

So if a player celebrates a goal, you don't respect them? Jee, what the **** do you think about Alex Ovechkin then?

Yes. Yes they should. 2 before his name and 2 after so it would stand out more, since if ever a hockey player deserved it, it would be Wayne.

Sort of like:

Best Ever
1. **Wayne Gretzky**
2. Bobby Orr
3. Gordie Howe
4. Mario Lemiuex...

Yes I'm sure that your ice hockey buddies would have hated to be set up with perfect passes every shift. I hate when that happens.

Haha, yeah, what the ****? Exactly what I was thinking. The guy had a lot more assists than he did goals. I'd like to have a guy who could feed me five passes that lead to goals in a season. As a defensive defenseman, that'd be a lot.
