I disagree. Only the finger wag was inappropriate. #17 shoved him (#6 Ref) down to the ice and was wrestling with him for at least 20 seconds after that. It nearly became a bench clearing brawl. The on ice officials were all working to stop it, but some of the guys with the white jerseys kept agitating the other team on the ice and even their bench.

What? That's not what happened at all.

Up until 0:40 - Ref#6 is keeping players in check from getting involved, which is fine. Frankly I don't like the way he one-hand shoves two players at 0:27, but whatever. He turns his back to them so he can deal with the bench, which again is fine.

0:40 - Some shoving breaks out, and Player#12 jumps head-first over the pile. Ref#6 turns around because he doesn't know what's happening behind him.

0:41 - Ref#16 grabs Player#12 and drags him out of the pile with one hand. At this point he's already making the questionable decision to engage in a brawl rather than standing back like his colleague, Ref#13, to monitor the situation and record penalties. Also, without realizing it, he's put Player#12 in a position where he can only react defensively to the feeling of someone pulling him around.

0:43 - Player#21 on the blue team pushes Ref#6 on top of Player #12, which creates a truly dangerous situation. Thankfully Player#21 did not choose to start throwing punches at the prone player, because the ref lying on top of him would have pinned him and left him defenseless. Also, Player#12 is now in a position where he has two different people leaning over him as he tries to scramble up to his feet. Ref#6 has unnecessarily escalated tensions and created a dangerous environment.

0:46 - Player#12, reacting defensively, pushes Ref#6 to the ice.

0:48 - Player#12 realizes what he did and appears to try to apologize. He puts his hands up and very lightly around Ref#6's waist to show no ill intent.

0:51 to 1:01 - Ref#6, without looking at the player, puts him in a headlock and slides him a good 15 feet to center ice. Meanwhile the player is clearly showing no aggression and is tapping him on the thigh and probably asking for him to release the headlock.

So in that whole sequence, Player#12 actually engaged an official one time for a duration of 2 seconds, on accident.

This is why referees are trained to stay out of those situation. In close quarters with a bunch of players swarming around, they are more of a danger than a solution. Player#12 could very easily have been pounded by Player#21 as a result of having a ref topple over him like that, to say nothing of the potential for the ref to get punched because he's grabbing players and dragging them around from behind. Then, to finish it off with an aggressive finger-wag right in a guy's face after he's held him in a headlock for 10 seconds?

IMO that's a situation where Ref#6 needs to have his behavior addressed by a senior official. It makes for a funny YT clip but it was a highly unprofessional display.

Wherever I'm standing atm
didnt seem as dramatic as the original posts made it appear.

He stopped "going after" the ref very quickly, and the "tap out" seemed to be immediate. As if he was saying "Oh ****, you arent an opposing player. Ok Ok, im done"

It looks like he wasnt aware he was going after the referee until he had already taken him to the ice.

Referee wasn't gonna take any chance seeing another player had almost ran over and manhandled a 2 linesmen.

It's about time I quoted a post of yours sir!

Agree the ref grabs the player from behind so the player doesn't see who it is, flips him and pushes him in one action. As the ref is standing back up the player has his hands out to the side showing he realizes now it's a ref. The ref responds to this harmless gesture with a guillotine and finger wag.
