Shea Weber is no longer a top pairing D.

The first word that comes to mind is slow. He is just slow in all aspects of the game. He tries to engage physically and gets walked by faster skaters. He's making brain dead decisions in his own end. HIs only redeeming quality is his shot.

Watching what he was vs now is honestly sad to see.

MTL is the best defensive team in the north so something is working over there, and its gonna work in the playoffs having a physical D like weber , we see it every year

We said all of that 4 years ago in Nashville. Nevertheless Shea managed to find a way. I suspect he'll continue to do so.

Weber has always relied on a very good PMD by his side to cover for his liabilities. You can see it in his play since coming to Montreal where he will immediately defer the puck to his D partner every single time. (Never skates it and generally does not make an outlet pass)

He also lacks some defensive awareness and lets players walk him regularly. While he is slower, any good defender would have adjusted their positioning over time to compensate.

Also, for someone with such a good shot he rarely uses it. I believe he is bottom five in shots and shot attempts on the Habs being beaten out by almost every other defender on the team.

No he was fully capable of looking good having Emelin as his partner. Now he doesn’t look nearly as good and he’s awful on the PP.

Well, I will respectively have to disagree on both of these points. For Emelin, this was a very short stint overall and Weber was quickly
paired with Markov (a great PMD) until his "retirement".

Concerning the powerplay, he was still able to blast it from the point but was never someone who quarterback the PP unit. The NSH PP was driven by Josi and was regularly a top unit in the league. In Mtl, the PP has been abysmal since Weber cannot direct the play nor can he have a quick release. Most PPs rely on a trigger man for a quick shot which the canadiens lack.

They wanted to trade their captain for a lesser player and willingly put themselves in position to soak up over $20m in salary cap hell *because* they wanted to get rid of the Weber contract.

OK.

Subban was great in his first 2 seasons in Nashville.

A contract isn't only about price but also term.

You might want to look at when Weber's ends.

Habs are playing bad as a team right now. Looking at Weber's play right now isn't really fair.
Why not have this thread in the first 10 games?
