Incorrect. It is objectively a move that has very strong odds of not working out to where the kid is an NHL'er. That doesn't make it a bad move. In this context, an insignificant move that will probably yield insignificant results doesn't make it a bad move, let alone objectively bad. It's just insignificant but your need to incessantly complain about things won't allow you to just leave it at that but instead use absolute language and exaggerate things. This stuff takes away from credibility and you've done it to such a degree that you don't have any.

You just admitted there are very strong odds that this kid won't play in the NHL, moreso than almost any other player the team has signed to an ELC in recent history. That makes it a bad move, especially because there would have been zero penalty for waiting to see how he performs this season. A move doesn't need to have cataclysmic consequences to be a bad one. Trading a 6th round pick straight up for a 7th round pick would be insignificant too but that doesn't make that a good move.

No, it makes it an insignificant move. A bad move actually has ramifications for the club if it doesn't work out or actually prevents them from doing anything of any real noteworthiness. This involves absolutely no risk whatsoever and has no consequences for not working out. It is the most insignificant signing in recent memory but you're so hellbent on making more of it than it actually is.

Signing a tiny winger who can't score in junior to a contract this long before the rights forfeiture deadline is objectively a bad move.

I don't think "objectively" means what you think it means. Slapping it onto your statements doesn't make them stronger or more correct, or more objective for that matter. It just makes it look like you think you can win an argument by force of assertion.

On a completely unrelated note, what is that expression about not mud-wrestling with a pig?

Seems like a waste of a contract slot but okay.

Based on what?

To put this in perspective, in baseball the vast majority of signees are never expected to play in the Major leagues. But as someone put it you need (in baseball several levels) to fill a farm team with reasonably talented players for the best prospects to play with on a farm team. In others words the best players have to have a team of players with which to play with to develop. Even then, some of the Non-prospects, actually out perform some of the "prospects" touted to make it to the NHL(for instance). If you took Mal's idea all the way the Sharks should only have 35 to 40 signees in order to save that money that is not his to spend. Without those speculative contracts then there would be little incentive for these reasonably talented players to fill these rosters and the only ones to play would be dreamers who are less talented hoping for so many injuries they get called up when they wouldn't normally have a chance to get to the NHL. Many would just go on with their lives, careers and put Hockey in their past. Plus some of those the Mal writes off will end up developing into valuable parts for the team. I can see his perspective that a certain prospect may not be worth a contract but with his injury history and his projection previous to his injury, this is a reasonably priced lottery ticket.
