A lot of people have speculated that the Sharks’ recent treatment of players like Suomela, Radil, and Donskoi will make future EuroFAs reluctant to sign with us but that doesn’t really seem to be the case.

Really? It seems like the Sharks give all those players opportunities, and when they shut them down, there are usually great reasons for it. Just for the players you mentioned, it isn't so obvious why Suomela was sent down, but Radil and Donskoi have earned their benchings. And, of course, you have the Sharks doing players like Praplan and Sandberg a solid.

Donskoi did not earn being benched over Micheal Haley.

The only one there whose treatment concerned me is Donskoi. Specially when Haley played over him.

Suomela played himself out this year after a hot start.

You mean that treatment where they got to play in the NHL, make a ton more than they would have in a Euro league, and be on national/worldwide broadcasts for their friends and family to watch back home?

I know that it’s hard to consider, but guys like Goodrow, Melker, Haley, all know exactly what this is. If you listen to them, there really isn’t much in the way of ego here. They know they aren’t future Hall of Fame players. Do you want to play 20 games a season in the NHL or 60 games a season in Liiga for 70-100k a year. Tim Heed has probably made close to a million dollars in his time with us. People think he is pissed about his lack of playing time. Not even.

Donskoi arguably earned his scratch. What's particularly debatable is if he should have been scratched for Haley. The answer is no for that

Like everyone else is saying, the scratching of Donskoi and playing of Haley are separate issues. By his own horrid play, Donskoi earned his benching.

I think you have to distinguish between how the Sharks organization treats these players (great) and how PDB treats these players (arguably not so great).

PDB won't be the coach here forever (even if the Sharks win the Cup this yr), so long term these types of players shouldn't worry too much.

Yes, that is a fair distinction to make.

And with that in mind, along with the fact that we do keep signing these guys, we can probably leave the discussion of whether or not PDB actually does treat these players unfairly to a different thread.

If nothing else, the sharks org is giving a lot of Europeans an entry point into America at a better rate than any other team in the league. In the past, these guys would have zero chance at the NHL. Not many teams willing to use a roster spot for a gamble on marginal European talent.
