This team had one(!) top 5 pick since original six times. That's one pick in 47 years. Yes, there is elite talent available outside of the top 5, but it's much harder to find. They screwed up in 2003, but to expect the Rangers to find elite offensive talents every other year at their draft position is just unrealistic. Overall drafting has been decent for the last years.

It's not so much the drafting, it's the time frame. The drafting over the last 6 or 7 years has been pretty good, but the management of those assets has been poor. Forcing kids like Kreider and Miller to play in the NHL when they aren't ready is not only bad for their development, but it creates this illusion for the ignorant fan that they've "stalled in their development" and are on their way to busting. IMO, this is one of the better looking groups of prospects we've had in quite a while. The problem is we need them to be ready, and they're not ready yet.
