Botchford is talking out of his &%% - he doesn't have a clue what was offered by who. What we do know is this - not one team was willing to part with their top prospect. Tampa wouldn't trade Sergachev, Dallas wouldn't trade Heiskanen, Vegas wouldn't trade Glass, etc. Why? Because Karlsson was and is a rental. He's an amazing, blue chip rental, but right now he's a rental. That significantly limited the return we could get. (We got some protection built in to the SJ trade in case he signs there, which was smart.) If Botchford says we got a better offer, then he should either give some details or zip it.

on top of being a rental he was coming off probably the worst year of his career. injury related of course that impacted the return because there is risk involved.

on top of those two things he's also involved in a pretty damn strange he said she said entanglement and who knows how that ends. for sure that impacted the return also.

The clause that gives the Sens a 1st if he is traded to the east tells the whole story.

They cut the league in half and didn't consider better offers from eastern teams.

I seriously doubt any teams will leak info now that Erik is in San Jose. It doesn't exactly help team chemistry to tell a couple guys on the roster you were almost traded to Ottawa and have that be public knowledge.

While we'll likely never know 100% for sure, there a reasonable chance an Eastern team had a better offer on the table. For whatever reason, it fell through.
