The further we get from the end of the season, the more I think they’ll overachieve. Nothing too crazy, but we end up with a pick closer to 15 than 1. They save their tank for after one of the bleakest off seasons in modern NHL in 2019.

I think the best case scenario (for me, for entertainment) is that the Sens overachieve, just barely miss the playoffs and defiantly hold onto their expiring contracts. Their pick wins the draft lottery. Their FAs leave for nothing. Dorion yells at everyone for not giving him proper value for his players. Melnyk yells at everyone for being greedy, and still owing him money for Ubers.

That would be fun for entertainment but I'd prefer to see them have a bad season and be forced to do a full rebuild. While Melnyk and Dorion are POS I hate seeing the fans suffer for it.

Agreed. They really just need to get at least three first rounders for Karlsson, Stone, and Duchene and if they're smart (I know, I know) pitch Ceci overboard for whatever the hell you can get. The pick is gone, they just need to accept it and move on.

But it's not gonna happen, we know it's not. They could've dealt Hoffman for futures, but apparently insisted on getting an actual player back, and as it turns out, a vastly inferior one.

Sens want to win this year, Melnyk can't afford to have a rebuilding team and Dorion can't afford to hand Colorado a top pick.

Having their 3 stars on contract years should be good for them (short term).

I was expecting it.

Seems very risky move, If they end up losing all their top players for nothing and misses the playoffs. I don't see how they will make playoffs.

If the plan fails they unload them at the deadline I guess.

It's easy to see why they think that winning will solve most of their issues: Fans will be happier (= more money for Eugene), star players might want to stay and Dorion gets to keep his job. That's a lot more tempting than tanking on a year without a 1st round pick and alienating even more the fanbase and the media.

Also, they don't look like complete dumbasses by giving Colorado a top pick (they might end up doing it anyway but they'll try very hard not to).

I feel the same way. Pretty much all of their good players will be playing hard with free agency in mind. And even though I expect the Sens to trade all or almost all of them at some point of the season the damage might already be done by then.

I don’t think Brady Tkachuk is going to make a huge impact on the Senators success. EK, Duchene and Stone are far and away their best players. Then there’s a considerable gap before you get to the next tier.

The Sens may bottom out, or they may compete for the playoffs. But however that plays out will mostly depend on the performance of those 3 with an honorable mention to goaltending.

Probably shouldn’t forget Thomas Chabot either. I’m not expecting it yet, but the kid has “stud” written all over him. It’s going to break out at some point. Hoping it waits for at least another year for our sake lol.

Can someone please explain how making their own picks worse by the virtue of just having the 1st rounder owned by the Avs worse makes sense for Ottawa?

He'll probably get a few games to start the season and then be sent to London Knights, unless he forces Sens hand with his play.

Just thinking about next season and building a plan around not wanting to give the Avs a good pick would be dumb. If they actually believe they aren't hurting Tkachuk's development and he should be in the NHL whether they had a pick or not then that's a different story.

He'll probably get a few games to start the season and then be sent to London Knights, unless he forces Sens hand with his play.

That would be surprising to me and the type of thing a top prospect like Tkachuk might get assurances about prior to signing. He could play in the AHL for a bit if he really looks out of place in the NHL.

Don't like that if I was a Sens fan, it's like they're signing him just for the sake of some good news in that organization. Brady is a damn good prospect, but his skating was quite off and I argue that he hasn't fully grown into his body yet to fit his playing style. He's going to have a Sam Bennett type of impact next season or in other words he's going to grind on the bottom 6 bringing those "amazing" intangibles people love to say in North American hockey.

1st and 3rd, to note.

Also optics. They'll never hear the end of it if the Avs end up getting a 1st-4th overall pick from it.

Interesting. Like I said before, that surprises me. His brother went there so there's already a relationship in place but I didn't think an American kid, who is already in school, would be willing to go to the CHL after turning pro.

London will be stacked next year with Bouchard, Boqvist, Formenton and Foudy. If they get Tkachuk, they'll be one of the Memorial Cup favorites.

Bouchard is more than likely playing as a PP specialist in Edmonton next year. They badly need that offensive RHD and they want him there ASAP. I was just watching Chiarelli's post draft interview the other day for some reason and he pretty much said that they now have their right shot defenseman and they picked him over Dobson because he is more physically mature. Didn't sound like he had "long term project" in mind, to say the least.
