    Dion Phaneuf
    32 years old, 7M AAV x 4 years
25.5M total left in real dollars which averages out to a 6.375M AAV x 4 years.

    2016-2017: 9g - 21a - 30p - 81gp

Averaged 23:02 minutes a night in the regular season
Averaged 23:18 minutes a night in the playoffs
Both 3rd most on the Sens roster behind Erik Karlsson and Cody Ceci.
Plays on the left point in Ottawa, but actually prefers & feels more comfortable on the right side.

I really don't see the upside of a Phaneuf trade for Ottawa.

Both because moving him opens up a hole on their defense that they can't readily fill, and because it seems extremely unlikely that they'll find anyone willing to take on what's left of his contract without Ottawa either retaining money, or without a worse player on a similarly bad contract (like Gaborik) coming back.

And both of those are non-starters for a budget team like the Sens.

I'm still annoyed over the whole Methot debacle, but the last thing Ottawa can do is trade Phaneuf without getting a legit second pairing guy back, and nobody is going to move one of those for Phaneuf.

Also **** me I'm feeling old when the 2003 draft class is 32-33 now.

Such commitment to winning love being a fan of the sens!

When the owner is calling the shots this is what you get. With no Bryan Murray around to talk any sense into him his sideburn less puppet will do as evil Eugene says.

With Methot lost on ED, Ottawa can't trade Dion without someone filling up the spot. He is a great mentor to young defencemen, besides everything else he brings even if he is overpaid by $2.0-$2.5 million (cap hit wise, salary is actually $6M and change for the remainder of his contract). The likes of Chabot, Claesson, and Harpur need a guy like Dion to settle them in. If there was a cheaper and equal quality 2nd pairing defenceman available, then that player would be more sought after by other teams anyway.

Phaneuf is a shutdown 2nd pairing defenceman who also brings offence and veteran leadership. I can see a market for him even with his contract (with or without some creative GMing on finances and cap hit swap/retention), but Ottawa will be taking a step backwards by creating that big a hole on defence.

Losing 2 legit top 4 Dmen in Methot and Phaneuf in a single offseason would sure suck, but I really don't think it's as disastrous as it could be given Ottawa's depth on the blueline.

    Claesson - Karlsson
    Chabot - Ceci
    Oduya - Wideman
    Harpur, Jaros, Englund, Boro

That's a young, talented group of Dmen that can get it done by committee imo.

It would absolutely be disastorous and thats the softest group of D men in the league bar none. To think otherwise is short sighted. The loss of Methot alone is going to be devastating. All these people putting Chabot right into the top 4 must not have much history in hockey and how long it takes for D men to adjust to the NHL. His game while incredibly skilled is very raw and he will need some time to adjust to the pro game.

    To Chicago:

    Phaneuf at 50 percent

    To Ottawa:

    Chicago's 2018 1st + something else

I believe Chicago can fit this under the cap since hossa will be on the ltir.

On the surface, it looks as though the Sens can hold onto Dion for another year, but they have a lot of FA's to sign next summer.

If the team needs to shed cap AND actual salary, their best bet is going to be to add a good pick/prospect with Dion, in exchange for a cheaper asset.

Question for Sens fans: what would you be willing to add to Dion in order to move him NEXT summer?

    Don't see this as news,
ANY team with a player of that age, wear and tear, and salary would always be open to consider a compelling deal.
But they wont give him away.

Garrioch at times seems to be the team's unofficial mouthpiece. If he's reporting that they are still attempting to deal Phaneuf, it might be a deliberate "leak" to get fans ready for when it actually happens.

Moving Phaneuf makes the Senators worse now, but it might be a bullet they have to bite. The opportunity to move him in a deal that is as salary friendly to the Senators might not be around next season. Phaneuf's value is probably at a high point coming off of the season and playoffs he just had. The Senators have Turris, Stone, and Ceci all coming up for raises. Turris in particular is in a position to ask for as much as 7M.

I also think there might be an element where Dorion might want to "force" Boucher into having to utilize Chabot. Listening to Dorion speak, he clearly feels Chabot is ready, he apparently wanted to recall Chabot last year leading to the playoffs on an emergency basis but it wasn't possible per NHL rules. Boucher has been very conservative when speaking of Chabot, famously stating something along the lines of "you don't let a baby chew on steak". Boucher's actions in the past show he is a very veteran leaning coach.

I really hate being a Sens fans right now. I understand we're still spending a lot of money somehow, but nonetheless, every significant decision we make seems to be financially driven.

Phaneuf would be moved if they got some sort of NHL value back. With his NTC and the unlikelihood of retaining ... he'll stay where he is.
