JBD is a much better prospect than Wolanin at the same age, and there's a very good chance when he is 23 (5 development years later) he'll be better than Wolanin is now.

Certainly a possibility but Wolanin took big steps forward so where he was at the same stage is largely irrelevant as at that point in time the most likely outcome for Wolanin was busting.

I mean, using at the same age boils down to something similar to JBD was a higher draft pick.

Ok but a lot of prospects are better than Drake Batherson at the same age, does that change the fact that he has been voted our 5th best prospect?

Like most I'm also intrigued by JBD potential but there's several factors to consider :

- He was taken 26th OA but was expected to be picked in the 2nd round by pretty much all sources (except ISS)
- He played in a rather obscure league
- He just turned 18, vs other prospects who had years of development. JBD has to make his way too
- He will most likely be a riser this year but we could have waited before ranking him that high (although it was close to the spot he should have went IMO)

You guys have a funny definition of "tie".

agreed. difference in original vote seemed large enough.

It was a suggestion from another poster and I thought it was a good idea. Of course, wouldn't have done it for the 17th best prospect but since we still have plenty of time before training camp, why not? There was 16 voters who voted for other options than Wolanin or JBD and since the difference between the two was 7 votes, result could have potentially shifted (and I'm sure that was Sensinitis idea there). I have seen weirder things.

Anyway, I'm always open for suggestion.

Well said.

I know we have a good crew of scouts, and they obviously know more about the kids than we do. But aside from Bondra, none of us have seen JBD play outside of a few minutes of 3-on-3 (which doesn't say much in the middle of summer). As much as I want to trust the scouts, it's very hard to make any kind of personal judgement on the kid with almost no knowledge or viewings of his at all.

On a different note, the voting did feel far enough advanced for JBD to get the nod at this spot before the tiebreaker. But hey, it's a looooong summer. We have plenty of time to make the new list, and it's not like the final list has any real significance outside of HF anyways.

Yeah, in the end we do that just for fun (and future reference) and right now, our prospect pool might be the only thing going really well so let’s enjoy it and even make it last as much as possible :sarcasm:

lol concerning JBD, unless you’re involved in scouting, access to NAHL games might be very limited. There’s probably some streaming somewhere but who would watch that league when there is already so much hockey to watch?

I know our scouts know what they are doing and they seem to be very high on him, but I think they grabbed him 26th because they absolutely wanted him and didn’t want to see another team nab him before they were picking again at 48th. They expect him to be a riser but right now, probably no one thinks that he’s a better hockey player than Wolanin.

We’ve seen Wolanin play at a high level in the NCAA and even look quite good at the NHL level so he’s the « known » commodity right now and has quite intriguing potential as well, he can shoot, he can pass, he can skate and reads the game well. Another advantage CW has is his dad had a pretty decent NHL career, so he probably thought him how to be a pro for quite some time now. If JBD becomes better and quickly, then it’s very good news

That being said, I can live with the fact that he is voted before Wolanin. It means we are really high on his potential.

To me, Wolanin is further along but JBD has a higher potential. The issue is that Wolanin has already surpassed JBD's floor imo, and still has room to grow. I'm at the point where it's flip a coin between them, there is no bad choice, but in all honesty, I have both higher than Formenton or Gustavsson (goalies are voodoo, to me you rank goalies exclusively on where they are not their potential).

Wolanin seems like a player who'll just keep getting better and better with time, a slow and steady improvement to the you don't notice game in and game out and maybe not huge numbers or flash, just one of those young D who in 1-2 years is playing 20 minutes a night, creating some offense, being steady at his own blueline, battling hard for you in the corners and being able to play from the 1st to the 3rd pair - kind of like a Filip Kuba
