Hey, you guys 'member when this award went to players like John Madden, Mike Peca, Jere Lehtinen, Guy Charbonneau and Bob Gainey?

I 'member.

Also, glaring omission to not give Jordan Staal a top 3 nod this season. The guy was terrific for Carolina this year.

Who should have he overtaken seriously?

Was hoping Jordan Staal might sneak into a finalist spot, but I don't really have an issue with any of these 3 guys. Realistically there's only one spot up for grabs as Bergeron and Barkov should be auto-finalists.

I think voter fatigue hurts Bergeron's chances since he's seemingly always a finalist lol.

Kinda want Stone to win it just so a winger gets one

Would love Bergy to get it but I want a none centre to get it this year. Thinking Stone does it

Barkov is literally god tier center. Has amazing attributes to make team mates better and is so good every where on the ice. He is like Crosby couple of years ago when you could put absolute trash on the same line and they still produce mad. There is not many players like that in league. So my choice is Barkov :D

Would love to see Stone win but I'm not holding my breath. Nominated twice as a winger is satisfying enough on its own.

Looking at past winners I'm only now noticing how rare it was for a winger to actually win the Selke.

Been almost twenty years since Lehtinen won his 3rd, back in'03.

All centers, since then!

On the topic of points, there's very few poor scorers or bottom 6 guys these days who are as good defensively as the best defensive players who can also score, so I don't really have a problem with the award tending to go to these type of players now. The only problem is that scoring is frequently used as a tool to judge a player's season, including their defense. Kesler was a beneficiary of this. As was Kopitar in his second Selke. Bergeron could have the worst defensive season of his career next year, but if he scored 90 points, he'd probably win the Selke again because the media would keep talking about what a great season he's having and assume that means defensively as well. I don't think that's an issue this year really.

Agree, you dont have the 3rd line defensive specialists anymore like a Carbonneau, so I dont know why people complain about "Selke is about points". Like you said, the best defensive forwards in today's league are 2 way guys who play heavy Top 6 minutes and contribute offensively.

Bergeron wouldn't win in your scenario, but he would get an undeserved nomination. I think Bergeron has lost on recent Selkes he should have won because of voter fatigue. He should have 5 or 6 by now, but voters are giving it (right or wrong) to "its his turn" guys in recent years, despite Bergeron dominating the defensive metrics. I do think there is a portion of the media voters that dont want him to pass Gainey as well.

Stone has been deserving many other years but this year isn’t a year he’s top 3. Shows how much this is a reputation award. Eriksson Ek was robbed of a nomination.
Yep. Same for Barkov. Danault should have gotten a nomination, but he didn't put up enough offense to win an award for defense.

As a Habs fan who really wants to re-sign Danault... nah it's fine.

Here's my hot take: In many cases these awards only serve to hurt the nominee's teams.

Subban (barely) winning the Norris --> Huge 8-year contract that he hasn't lived up to.
Price winning MVP/Vezina --> Huge 8-year contract that he hasn't lived up to (except for the last two weeks).
