We'll also likely have a compliance buyout period coming out of the next CBA so that's going to effect the expansion draft.

Unlikely. There were compliance buyouts after the 2012 lockout because the players' share of revenue was decreased which through contracts out of wack. Both sides have said it's unlikely that they'll move off a 50/50 split of revenue this time so we probably won't be in the same situation.

They still may negotiate in a buyout period. It's happened in both of the last CBA's. Big markets will be pushing for it. I certainly wouldn't completely rule it out.

Depends on Hyman (and Johnsson's play). Hyman will be 29 and a UFA at the time of the draft. If he's slowed down and/or is going to be too expensive then he'll probably walk and we protect Johnsson. Or there could be some other young player who's broken out that we don't even know about yet. Johnsson is probably right on the edge right now.

He would be competing with Grundstrom for the last protected spot. There really don't appear to be any up and coming forwards in the system to push them out but there has to be some trades in the next two years as well. The Leafs are in decent shape for sure.

Fair enough, could be something that's on the table.

I'm still on the optimistic side that we'll avoid a lockout. Seems like both sides are fairly happy with the way the league has been performing over the course of the last CBA.

They can't even amicably agree to a World Cup without some crap being flung. Bettman threw a jab out there today about it.

It wouldn't be a Bettman run negotiation without a lockout. Players will cave as they always do.

Protected Lists
* Clubs will have two options for players they wish to protect in the Expansion Draft:
a) Seven forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender
b) Eight skaters (forwards/defensemen) and one goaltender
* All players who have currently effective and continuing "No Movement" clauses at the time of the Expansion Draft (and who to decline to waive such clauses) must be protected (and will be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).
* All first- and second-year professionals, as well as all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).

So neither Sandin or Lilj will be exempt. Rip.

He’s proven to be a great cheap supplement to a dominant pair that can contribute, freeing up more skilled options to feast on weaker opponents. If you’re starting a team from scratch and not worried about cap, maybe you can pay a UFA more to take those spots.
Would prefer a dominant trio ...to compete with other dominant trios.

This would actually be a case where you may not mind giving up a 2nd for them to take Zaitsev, cause that cap room is literally "money in the bank."

Just protect the talent and don't get cute trying to save the best guy you have to expose. There were some kooky moves made in the Vegas draft handing out draft picks and talent like candy. It was almost like the teams forgot that they could only lose one player.

Not sure if similar has been posted before but was just wondering what the Seattle expansion draft will look like for the Leafs.
Are the rules the same as Vegas?

They allowed each team to either protect seven forwards, three defencemen, and one goaltender or, one goaltender and eight skaters regardless of position etc etc etc.

Maybe I'm way too early but What are your projections when it comes to what players they will protect?

Taveras
Matthew's
Marner
Nylander
Kadri

Rielly
Zaitsev
Gardiner (doubt they resign though)
Dermott (may not have enough games)

Freddy

Those are just some of the main names. Care too add? Who might they lose?
Will it even be an issue?

I think we won’t protect Taveras.

We will probably protect Tavares though ;)
