Reports: Couturier Reinjured Knee

French media outlets Journal dé Montreal and TVA Sports reported on Tuesday night that Flyers center Sean Couturier recently reinjured his right knee in an offseason hockey game. The newspaper stated that Couturier has returned to Philadelphia to meet with Flyers team doctors.

According to the JdM report, Couturier suffered a medial collateral ligament injury to his right knee, the same injury and the same knee the Flyers' first-line center injured at practice during the 2018 playoffs in a collision with teammate Radko Gudas. This time, Couturier was playing in the Boot Camp Tournament in Quebec City two weeks ago and reinjured his knee on a non-contact play, making a routine move on the ice.

Surgery was not required after the initial injury, nor it is expected to be necessary now according to the Journal dé Montreal report by journalist Jonathan Bernier. However, the typical recovery course of about six weeks leaves Couturier's status for the start of training camp and the preseason up in the air.

The Flyers have not, as yet, commented on the report.

Noncontact injury supposedly on a routine move, I'd get him to a specialist, twice in four months needs a closer look.

Hollywood........what are using to strangle yourself? Bare hands, rope or wire? ;)

What is the bright side of this: Maybe Patrick first line? Giroux second and Frost third??

If the timetable really is 4-6 weeks, that would mean he’s back at the end of September or early October.

If there’s no complications or lasting effects then this isn’t too big of a deal.

Non-contact injuries on routine moves are particularly worrisome. And it’s not a good sign it’s the same injury he suffered just 3 months ago.

As I said in another thread, this is not the news I wanted to wake up to. Having a slowed Couturier with a knee that seemingly could go at any minute is a bad thing heading into the season.

I can imagine Hextall throwing his phone against the wall after hanging up from that call.

I've never had this happen before, but a pen exploded in my pocket today. Okay, it actually only leaked a very tiny bit but enough so there is a visible blotch showing through my jeans; the size is smaller than an eraser on a pencil and I am wearing dark blue jeans and the ben has blue ink.

I knew today was going to be a bad day.

So why didn't he get surgery the first time?

MCL strains don't usually require surgery. Even if they are grade 3 like this one.

Eric Staal suffered MCL sprain, avoids surgery | CBC Sports

Sanheim also suffered an MCL strain in the AHL playoffs. Based on how long he was out, I would guess he and Couturier both had grade 2 MCL sprains.

  • A grade 1 MCL injury is the least severe. It means that your ligament has been stretched but not torn.
  • A grade 2 MCL injury means that your ligament has been partially torn. This usually causes some instability in your knee joint.
  • A grade 3 MCL injury is the most severe type of ligament injury. It occurs when your ligament has been completely torn. Joint instability is common in a grade 3 MCL sprain.

What were Couts previous injuries. At some point it seems like he has had a series injury each year since 14-15 season

2018-19: possible re injured knee
2017-18: torn MCL
2016-17:
2015-16: knee + shoulder

What was the injury in 2016-17 again? I know he only play 60+ games. Was that the knee injury vs Florida or was that 2015-16 season?
