We need four young forwards like that. Do we even have two?

You can't expect to always land top-5 picks, unless you are the Oilers.

If you want to get 4 young star forwards, you need to find gems in the late rounds. Aho was taken mid 2nd. round. in the same round, we took Gropp.

You need to find those gems. we draft solid players in the 2nd and 3rd, but not stars.

Buch is great to get in the 3rd. exceeded his slot value. but he is not a difference maker. Kreider taken at #19 OA is actually good value for where he was drafted, but you need to *vastly* exceed your slot value. We never do that aside from the least slot-valuable position (goaltender). Kakko might not reach his slot value, even if he is a good middle-6 NHLer.

Short term, no. But long term, it was the right decision.

I completely support and am a big advocate of the decision. I was just saying the way the team is currently constructed and competing to win in the playoffs is better off having Skjei, than not having him. I didn’t have any expectations for us to do well but didn’t think we would get swept either.
