I didn't even follow the trade discussion. Is someone saying that they want to do Couts for Marner?

Someone suggested a laughably bad package of mediocre assets & spare parts for Couturier (with retention too!) if Philly was looking to really "reboot" things... Marner was brought up as a counter

If the Flyers traded Laughton for a pick, especially a 1st, I'd prefer it be for 2022, even 2023.

I'd rather roll the dice that someone like Toronto's pick was better 2 or 3 yrs out than what looks like it will be 29 to 32nd.

Later year pick is worth less. Definitely want a sooner pick. The difference in value between a pick in the early to mid 20’s and 29-32 is marginal at best.

I disagree for a couple of reasons. The Flyers don't need immediate prospects help so kicking the asset down the line is a value or at least not a negative.

And the difference between say 28th and 20th can be significant in any given draft year.

I'd do a 1st for Laughton easy (@50% Retained).

We just gotta find someone to take Kerfoot still.

Who is more appealing to a team looking for a 3rd line C / W...

Laughton 17 ES pts
Bennett 9 ES pts

Last year:
Laughton 27 ES pts
Bennett 11 ES pts

It should be clear. Oh...and Bennett has played more games.

Yeah, the only real argument for Bennett I can see is that he's still an RFA when his current contract expires (which might be somewhat negated by the fact he could possibly be a candidate to not be give a qualifying offer)... that and the ol "playoff warrior" narrative

For what it's worth, my ideal scenario would be trading Laughton and then resigning him when he hits UFA.

Didn't they put in a rule that you had to wait a year to sign a player you traded away because some team kept trading a guy and then re-signing him the next season and then trading him at the deadline again? Or did I just dream that?

I could be wrong here, but I think you're thinking of the compliance buy-outs. Teams couldn't acquire a player who had played for them the year before a compliance buyout, to avoid cap circumvention stuff. (Could also be thinking of the NBA here; they do have a reacquisition rule.)

And where would he play? Over who?

We just don't have the "need" or cap space to re-sign him for 3.5-4 million
I tend to agree, but he could play over Lindblom.

<looks around>

Is it ok to say that yet?

I don't think the Flyers trade him because they would benefit from that, and as Flyers fan, it makes sense to expect the team to do dumb things.

I think he could garner a 2nd rounder with the possibility of becoming a first rounder if the team wins the Cup.

He could. But we have already committed 3 million/year to Lindblom to play in the top 9...and hopefully produce like he did pre-cancer. A full offseason to train properly AND rest should do wonders for Lindblom.

Reminder, he was on a 30 goal pace when he was diagnosed with cancer.

Solid third liner, plays center and lw, can chip in offense, above average defensively. Not afraid to engage physically. He's a ufa this summer and with the Flyers' playoff hopes looking slim I'm sure he'll garner some interest from contenders. What would you be willing to offer?

I’ll keep him and dump several other flyer players. If he must be traded, Teams better offer a 1st rounder , if its picks, or just leave the phone down because he’s a valuable guy.

I think I'd still prefer Laughton but Bennet is an absolute playoff monster and makes this closer than regular season stats would suggest.
