Darling should probably start. No need to potentially ride Cam into the ground again, and if Darling has to make a start again, I'd rather it not be after 2+ weeks against a team better than the Red Wings. The only other ideal time to give him a start would be vs. the Canucks. Can Cam wait that long for a break?

I'd like to see Ward start as much as possible but we have to be smart about it.

I'd rather let Darling go and try and build his confidence back up against a bad Detroit team rather than throw him out against San Jose.

With that said. Darling and Alves were in the nets in morning skate this morning so it seems Ward is going again tonight.

"Scott Darling has been great for me. We're supporting one another and trying to help this team win."

Cam had this to say about Darling after the game last night. Darling is an extremely well paid motivational figure at this point.

To be fair, the quote from Pesce makes it sound like they'd rather have Ward in net anyway.

Ward has played only 25 games so far this year so unlike prior seasons, he's relatively fresh. On top of that, he's coming off of a recent bye week and the all-star break.

Canes have 31 games left. Let's say they give Ward 23 and Darling 8. That still puts Ward at only 48 games, his lowest total in years. Even if he played all 31 (which he won't), he'll have played less than last season, where he played 61. At this point, I'm not too worried about riding Ward until he breaks.

I'm sure they would. Ward gives them the best chance to win at the moment. I'd love to have been a fly on the wall in that 8 minute (or whatever it was) "sit down" BP had with Darling. Cam getting starts on B2Bs means they have 0 confidence in Darling. That's if Cam is actually getting the start tonight.

My only concern with starting Ward tonight would be, he get's little rest before another game on Sunday at 1:00 pm if they're going with him in that game as well. Darling really needs to start, and play well in one of the games. Maybe the SJS game is a better fit. Who knows.

Not that I disagree, but really it didn't feel like Cam was worked too hard last night by Montreal. They had 27 shots on him but it felt like there were maybe 1 or 2 high quality chances for the Habs the entire game outside their PP. If Cam still feels fresh after that game I'd see if he wants this one.

Good points. Maybe it's a bit defeatist but I can see the logic in giving Ward this one and darling a sharks game that is out of conference on a Sunday when no one is watching anyway.

Ward hasn't started many games overall due to Darling playing more to start the season. I'm just worried about consecutive games played, although the All Star break did give him a bit of rest. After tonight we play mostly playoff teams or teams right on the bubble for the next 45ish days, other than the Canucks and Red Wings. Cam should probably start all but 2-3 of those games.

I don't love feeling the need to start Ward so much, or on a back to back, but at this point, I do get it. As much as we'd like to get Darling confidence or a slam dunk win, the points are obviously very important right now, and they don't want to let a winnable game slip away. We just have to hope and pray that he stays healthy, and that bad Cam doesn't show up too often.

Let's not forget we're talking about a goalie with a history of back issues. I'd much rather see Darling tonight to keep Cam rested and fresh for more games later in the season.

At home, Detroit, back-to-back. If not Darling now, then when?

That's fair, I was just saying he hasn't played that much hockey so far and thus "wear and tear" on his body should be less than it has in other seasons, even if they give him the majority of the starts from here on out. He's had some rest during the bye week and all-star break so I'm not as concerned as I would have been in past seasons.

When Ward's back gives out. :sarcasm:

Seriously though, I wasn't saying Darling shouldn't go tonight. I'd be fine with that and before Peter's post game comments last night, was assuming Darling would start tonight. If he struggles, you can always pull him and put Ward in. I was just saying that I could see a argument for why Ward would get the start and why he has less wear and tear than prior seasons.

Ward has almost never had his A game when playing back to back. The question is, is his C+ game better than the game Darling will bring? I hope the staff picks the right guy and that the team is not flat in front of who ever they choose.

Curious, does anyone know his record/stats in back to back's this year? Or last 2 years?

If he's usually much worse in B2B, then I'd think Darling should be a no brainer?

So 5-2-1 2.50 GAA and .913 SV%.

Yeah that’s slightly better than his overall numbers this year and last so certainly not a case against starting him.
