Think I saw this comparable made the other day
Who's better currently (including some projection - not just the 20-game sample size)? Kuz is obviously having a huge year and Scheif has started slowly but their paces may not be sustainable.

It’s kuz, this isn’t some hot streak, he was arguably just as important in Washington’s cup run as ovi

In Scheifele's only extended playoff push he had 14 goals in 17 games, he can handle himself in the playoffs. He also has slightly better career highs in goals and points (not much) and better consistency from year to year while also being the best player on his team.

I'm not gonna say he's 100% the better player overall (and he's not this year so far) but I'm pretty sure that they are equal or kuz is on the lesser end.

The recency bias on here is hilarious.

If this poll was made a few months ago Scheifele would win in a landslide.

And that would’ve been hilarious.

Scheifele is nowhere near ”landslide” better than Kuzy, currently he is worse and in general it’s too close to call.

So was he on a cold streak for the 3 years in between then or what?
Ya, he was. He was arguably the worst 1C in the league and his metrics were awful. He went from completely dominant in 2018 to a guy that couldn't' enter the zone. This is the player he is but he is a mentally weird player.

I'm surprised this is even close as it's clearly Kuznetsov.

Another poll showing exactly how much HFers are influenced by recency bias
The poll uses the word "currently" as in this year and it's handily Kuzy. At their best it's Kuznetsov as well, nothing bias about that.

So 25 games is enough to make the "worst 1C" "clearly" better than one of the most consistent point producers in the league?

Mark scheifele has the better track record

last 3 years
Mark Sceifele
144 GP - 55G - 93A - 148P
that becomes a 31G - 53A - 84P over an 82

Evgeny Kuznetsov
129GP - 36G - 73A - 109P
that becomes a 23G - 46A - 69P over an 82

going back 5 years
Mark Scheifele
286GP - 116G - 176A - 292P
That becomes a 33G - 51A - 84P over an 82

Evgeny Kuznetsov
284GP - 80G - 180A - 264P
That becomes a 23G - 52A - 75P over an 82

Scheifele is the better goal scorer no doubt, and he’s equal in terms of playmaking.

An interesting is that, Scheifele has played 3 more minutes on average (18 vs 21) in the last 5 years. Don’t know how much of that is due to Kuznetsov being held back because of backstrome and how much is that of Kuznetsov not being able to handle 1st line deployment. I’d lean a bit towards the latter because even in his peak years, when he was a ppg, Kuznetsov average. 18-18:30 minutes per game.

there isn’t an AINEC, but it’s Scheifele in almost every aspect, even if it’s just an edge. 25 games shouldn’t change that

I can’t wait till the end of the season when someone suggests that Kyle Connor had a season pretty close to Ovi (as they have had pretty comparable numbers over the last 2 years) and then people who voted for Kuz will say that Connor Benefitted from his center while Ovi carried the load.

We have all seen this movie before.

Took the more consistent center from Winnipeg but ya last 20 games.

I think when Kuznetsov is on, he’s a bit better, which he has been this season. He’s incredibly inconsistent though, while Scheifele is generally the opposite. If you want to get super specific and say which you would take for a game tomorrow, then sure, take Kuz, as Scheifele hasn’t gotten up to speed yet this season, which is understandable after Covid. I think it’d be foolish to pass up Scheifele on your team going forward for any decent length of time though.

Track record isn't the goal here. Kuznetsov when motivated to play is a legit top 1c. That is what happened with the cup season and its what is happening now.

It said this year, did it not?

IMO there's a distinction between "who's better currently" and "who has played a better 25 games this year".
It's like when Gagner scored 8 points in a game, I wouldn't have said he was a better player than Crosby that particular day.

Fair enough and in my defense I'm using this year but if we're using the definition of currently as in the last couple years along with this one, then it's Scheif.
