Where is this 'never getting over the hump in the 90s' coming from? That whole thing revolved around Steve Young. And then they won. And eventually he got hurt and it was over, which obviously includes all the other stuff that ended up going on. It's not like the Marino-Dolphins we're talking about here. They won 5 Super Bowls in 14 years. Nobody else has done that. This is like litigating the Patriots run because they went 10 years between Super Bowls.

They did something because dirtballs like Davis and Art Modell whined and complained despite those 2 having more ethical and character issues than most owners.

49ers got what they deserved, which was almost nothing.
Convicted felon Eddie Debartolo gave the governor of Louisiana a briefcase with 400k in cash as a bribe for a riverboat gambling license. He was the worst of the worst and obviously familiar with paying under the table.

He was a fantastic owner whos players loved playing for him. He treated them like family. That goes not only for the 49ers, but the Pittsburgh Penguins as well.

Yea he f***** up and got caught bribing a public official but that doesn't make him a bad team owner, just someone who did something illegal/questionable. Ray Lewis killed a guy and nobody holds that against him.

His players still love him. DeBartolo revolutionized ownership and made the Niners a family atmosphere.

The problem with the Niners was Walsh cutting guys in their prime who didn't want to leave. There was no loyalty. If your time was waning down he'd let you go in a flash. When I was watching the Bill Walsh football life he said he did this often and he said he regretted doing it in interviews

The irony is that just when they had finally turned the tables onDallas, here comes Green Bay.

The Niners had been trying to climb Mt Cowboy, yet Mt Packer arguably was more troublesome (DAL beat them 2x in the playoffs, GB 3x!)

Beating GB on their field with the wind chill below zero and Kap at qb vs Rodgers makes up for most of it.

I think those who said that San Francisco was good in the 1990s, very good actually, make a good point, but so were the Giants, Cowboys and Packers...all teams who defeated them in NFC Championship games in the decade. The 1990 game could have gone either way, when SF was going for a 3-peat. But Roger Craig fumbled the ball and the Giants took advantage. The Cowboys were exceptionally strong in the period from 1992-1996. They probably had the best roster top to bottom in the NFL for those five seasons. When Dallas started to step aside, Green Bay emerged as another powerhouse. Where Troy Aikman was a very good QB for Dallas, Brett Favre was the MVP of the league for 3 straight years. The NFC seemed ridiculously competitive in the 1990s. With the exception of Denver's back to back in 1997 and 1998, the NFC won the Super Bowl every year of the decade. Of course the power would shift to the AFC in the 2000s, with the emergence of the Patriots, Steelers and Colts.

It goes by decade to be honest:

2010 - AFC
2000 - AFC
1990's - NFC
1980's - NFC
1970's - AFC

This is in terms of Super Bowl wins and conference dominance of teams.
