Joseph Tsai, co-founder and vice-Chairman for Chinese e-commerce behemoth Alibaba, has been awarded the National Lacrosse League's 10th franchise, to start play in San Diego in the Valley View Casino Center in November of 2018.

That's the piece that's apparently set now. RUMORS are swirling about an East Village arena project on privately-owned land (the East Village is the downtown neighborhood in which Petco Park now also stands) for the NLL team, and with any new arena project comes the inevitable speculation about the return of the NBA to San Diego -- other people have pointed to the Rockets being for sale, for example. The only hockey impact that I can see is potential impact on the AHL Gulls, as I just can't see San Diego landing the 32nd NHL franchise.

I've often wondered about San Diego as a NHL market. Thought they should be given a shot. If the NBA looks to expand anytime soon they'd be wise to look to San Diego.

Would be cool to see San Diego in the league. I'm not sure how often Calgary would get to play them since it looks like on the website they would be in the opposite division.
