It was always know that Morin was more of a project than a sure fire top prospect. They drafted him after having just 16 points in the Q his draft season but he turned it on in the playoffs so they went for his upside which has since been destroyed by injuries. He was looking good in the AHL after 16-17 and it looked like he would make the jump but has only played 24 games the past two seasons combined and some of the younger prospects passed him during that time.

When he was drafted the Flyers also had almost no prospect pipeline so he was a little light of hope. He was the first defenseman they picked in the first 2 rounds in 5 years. The Flyers top prospects at the time were Laughton, Ghost (nobody knew he would be an NHL player at that time), Nick Cousin, and Taylor Leier. I might be missing someone but I don't think they had anyone else with even slight NHL upside. As soon as Sanheim was drafted and then Provorov the following year, Morin was an after thought.

Always felt he was going to be a bust. He was hyped due to size, but the absence fo skill didnt bode well.

He could be a 7th D in the future, but at this time the value for him is virtually nothing. He is waiver fodder

Ghost played like ****e during Calgary game, I would bench him and place Morin in his place.

Then all we have to do is take Ghost, put him back into the lineup, place Hagg in the press box. Then we'll be good.

…...he didn't. Morin was easily our best prospect at that point. We picked Laughton with our own 1st round pick in 2012 and hadn't used our own 1st round pick since 2008 before that.

Wow.

I said team's best prospects get overhyped, guy says prospect was best up to a certain point in time.

Doesn't see that that proves my point.

Critical thinking is in short supply.

He hasn't been our best prospect since Sanheim was drafted in June 2014.
He was still overhyped.

Morin was a horrible pick at the time. There were so many better players on the board, but the Flyers scouts liked his "ability to be hard."

Bunch of morons.

Saying someone is the best prospect does not mean that he's overhyped. From Day 1 he was drafted, nobody was overly thrilled with the pick, nobody expected him to come in and be a top pairing defensemen, everybody knew he would be a project defensemen.

Morin’s draft was eons ago. He is no longer a prospect. That ship sailed long ago.

Not really. He should have made the team but was sent down for some dumb reason and then tore his ACL. He hasn’t had a chance to get started. I think he could be a very effective player for a good team. I hope it’s ours.

What’s the deal with Myers? Still in ahl?

Yup. Again, should have made the team. Saw it with ghost too. Flyers still have Frost and Farabee in the AHL.

Quebec version of Dylan McIlrath

Except...Morin can actually skate. Pretty well too. Something McIlrath never could really do. At least, as long as that ACL injury hasn't completely killed his mobility or something.

No, they weren't.

He was taken as a project and he's never broken out into "the next big thing" -- you're forgetting which of our several D prospects we were hyping up.

This is some revisionist history. Morin was in the system before Provorov, Myers, and Sanheim. There was a period of time in which Morin was most certainly the "next big thing" for many Flyers fans after he was drafted (11th overall!), with some hype shared with Gostibehere as he gained steam in his D+1 season. While that hype is dated compared to more recent hype as injuries have completely derailed Morin's chances, that doesn't mean the hype never existed.

It's not revisionist history - no one ever claimed Samuel Morin was going to be a stud in the Flyers farm system. We all knew Morin was taken higher than he probably should've been and was a project.

Let's just settle at this because you want to split hairs: Morin had the typical hype a solid 1st round pick has right after the draft, especially in a position of organizational need.

He was never hyped as the next great d-man in Flyers history.

Something has to shake loose at some point because Myers is/should already be here.

And then in pre-season, Friedman looked very good and next year he needs to clear waivers. So unless they plan on carrying 8 Dmen all year or keep Myers down all year, something will happen at some point.

Of course injuries always happen but the Flyers are lucky so far to have all 7 guys healthy. So maybe it's just about waiting things out until the eventual injury happens. But even then, it could be Myers who gets the call-up to play.

He needs to get in some games but also practicing hard and having no injuries is a good thing at this point. He has lots of rust to shake off. But in pre-season he certainly didn't look out of place and got better as camp went along.

For his career he'd definitely benefit from being traded. Over the last 2 season he's played 24 games (17 AHL and 7 NHL), that's next to no hockey in some of his prime development years. Could still figure things but he needs to play a full season, even if it is in the AHL.

There were Flyers fans comparing him to Pronger.

It's like the Tinordi's pick by the Habs few years ago. Not 1st rounders at all.

But the kid was injured seriously which could had been bad for his development.

Like who? Pronger scored 117 points in 82 games in his draft year.

You can always find a couple of fans with no connection to reality. But they don't speak for the majority.

It was definitely a narrative that Philly sports media tried to push, and a bunch of fans bought into it.
