The issue has to be fundamental. One side wants a bridge the other wants a longer term. If I'm Reinhart's agent i'm negotiating based around a 6 year ask. That's the worst possible option for Buffalo.

If I’m Reinhart’s agent, and I trust our relationship and that he will keep me as his agent long term, I’m negotiating for a bridge deal as close to 5 a year as I can get.

You're serious with this? If you're of the mindset that the only way a primary assist happens only before a one-timer, then you might need to watch more hockey. There was a large discussion years/seasons back about the misuse of Reinhart as a winger to retrieve pucks. Byslma got a lot of criticism for his player usage and this is one of them. Reinhart has always been a guy to read off a play, and pounce on a loose puck and make a play. He's not a guy that his role should be trying to dig pucks out.

I read this: "If the play isn't going through him it doesn't succeed." as he's pretty darn important for the play on the ice. Seems the offense does go through him.

But that seems like something positive. If you're trying to prove another point you'll need to go more into detail about it.

It’s a pretty silly statistic without context that is variable upon many factors outside the player: teammates, system, etc.

Can we move back the goalposts to where they were? The question was how you can use the statistics against Reinhart because you made a comment of how that statistics can be used against him as well. You have still not explained HOW you can use that statistic against him. You have a valid point though about it doesn't provide context about those assists, which doesn't necessarily mean it's negative OR positive, but that is a different story.

In case you wonder why talks are slow...Sam is still a guy that scores a bunch of tip ins.

His goals from last season:

There are maybe 3-4 impressive efforts, the rest you can get a net front specialist to do. I agree with Botts holding out and not giving Sam the world just because he is good in front of the net. We need this skill but that's not enough in today's NHL to be worthy of high pay for a winger. 16-17 was roughly the same sort of highlights on his goals. Botts shouldn't be paying a dime more than 5mil for this kind of production. 6 years @ 5 sounds about right to me. Or just bridge him at 3mil if he doesn't take that, he doesn't have much leverage to hold out as an RFA.
I think Sam Reinhart in his ELC has played more cumulative defense and 3-zone game than Thomas Vanek has played in his career. But what does the eye test mean when we have tip-ins and secondary assists tallied???
Cac's world: "How good is Reinhart, all he does is tap-ins and tips".

The real World: "Reinhart goes where the puck is going to end up like other elite hockey players, and he's good at it"
Is that Cac_OBG's new handle?
He took his talents to South Beach.
Reinhart's having a beer with me as we speak. We're having a rematch at Scrabble (before we have our fast-passes later this evening at WDW Hollywood Studios new Toy Story Land). Dude's a beast with vocabulary. Doesn't even bother asking me to allow the Canadian / British spellings (litre, fibre, etc.) - claims he doesn't need it. No two- and three-letter "tip ins" for him. Twice already he's used all 7 letters in one turn to earn the 50-point bonus. Reino claims Botts saw him beat ROR by 200 pts one game in the player lounge. Told me Botts then promptly whipped out his cell phone and quietly said "Doug Armstrong?? It's Jason Botterill..." as he was walking out of the locker room.
