Sam Bennett continues his good start in Fla with a goal so far tonight after 2A in his first game. I know he was playing well in CGY right before his trade but he has also been candidate #1 for "could benefit from a new team" for a while.

What does everyone think going forward for the once highly-touted player?

He was criminally mishandled in Calgary. He's going to be a very good player for Florida.

He actually had points in 5 of his last 6 games with the Flames and 6 total points in those 6 games. Bennett was always capable of very hot streaks. He was Calgary's best skater in the playoffs two years running. That's why Calgary got the return they did for him.

The problem with Bennett was the incredibly long dry spells. I wish the best of luck to Bennett. Always loved his effort, and hope for him that this is more than another hot streak.

He struggled with consistency in Calgary, but I'm hopeful that this trade is the wake up call he needs to take the next step.

Bennett was given lots of chances...he had all the engine in the world...just did not play like a very smart human being.

He was forced to drag around garbage on his line for his entire time in Calgary. He's just what Florida needed and he will continue to be this good for them as long as they have Quenneville and they surround him with players that complement him

This organization mortgaged its entire window on Sean Monahan and a cohort of idiot coaches and they're reaping what they've sowed

How many chances did he get to play his natural position with anyone of notable talent?

I figured he was going to be a fantastic add for any team that got him. I really wish we had nabbed him but I doubt that was ever going to be an option

It’s more of a “Send your average players to Florida and they’ll turn them into superstars” thing than anything

It looks like he really needed a change of scenery and is starting to fulfill his potential. Lord I hope this is the case.

He's always been a #1C talent in a shitty role. No, he's not Crosby or Matthews but he's right there in that ROR / Toews tier.

There was that time in the 2017 preseason against the Coyotes!!!

and then he starts the season on a line with Curtis Lazar

We have so much bad money tied up in overpaid defensemen and goalies that we can only afford cheap linemates for Barkov and Huberdeau who then make them look like legit top 6 guys.

Hes in the the Curtis Lazar tier right now. Let's see if he can actually produce at the level of guys like Toews and ROR before placing him there.

Maybe something like a "rising tide lifts all ships" thing.

When a team is rolling it's like they can do no wrong and you see the best in everyone

Look up his ice time. There were plenty of games when he was given 16-17 minutes of ice time including lots of PP time. It wasn't just that he didn't produce. He was often actively bad. His classic move was skating into the corner and then passing to no one.

Once again, I love Bennett and hope he does break out. He always gave it his all in Calgary and put his body on the line. Hilarious those people calling him a ROR/Toews type, when there were multiple threads calling him a bust when he was on Calgary.

Never got special teams time. Once he started to PK under Sutter, I saw a much more confident player because he was beginning to be relied upon.

Can almost guarantee we’re going to be saying “the one that got away”. Look at how well he plays with Huberdeau, an elite winger. He never got a significant amount of time with Gaudreau or Tkachuk. Nor did he get to play top 6 center minutes over Monahan and Backlund. Lastly, coaching plays a huge part. The best coaches get the best out of what they have. Sutter and Hartley >>> GG, Peters, Ward

    :whaaa?:

He's in his 6th NHL season and his career high is 36 points. A ROR/Toews type would absolutely force their way into a 1C role over Monahan. Bennett ain't that

I didn't ask about ice time. I asked about opportunities to play his natural position with anyone of notable talent.

The answer is pretty much never. Maybe a shift or two here or there, or in a stretch where Monahan was hurt. Certainly never long enough to allow him to build confidence or chemistry.

Jonathan Toews wouldn't have done shit playing LW on a line with Mark Jankowski and Tobias Reider, among other fails.

The idea of forcing your way up the lineup only works if you're comparing apples to apples.

Monahan was getting gimmies setup by Gaudreau and never went cold. Coaches never even thought to take him off that line - for anyone.

Bennett easily an 80 point 1C, but Monahan.

Gaudreau easily a 150 P Hart winner, but Monahan.

Tkachuk easily an 80 point Selke winner, but Monahan.

Markstrom a HOF multiple time Vezina winner, but Monahan.
