I’m not so sure, given the lackluster year viewership and ticket sale wise. Chris Illitch may keep a tighter purse

If Detroit sold out every home game, why would Ilitch be worried about ticket sales?

2017-2018 NHL Attendance - National Hockey League - ESPN

Imo, only thing he could be worried about, is the product. Why the ticket holders are not joining games. Tickets are sold but seats are empty.

Bring in new kids, sign some known free agents, make a trade = the way to make the product interesting. Not probably winner or better, but interesting. That means using the full cap.

Lol, not all the tickets that are "sold" are actually even sold. Attendance totals are not regulated whatsoever and a once-great but now desperate franchise with considerable wealth can afford to comp all kinds of tickets, regardless of whether it gets butts in seats to spend money on merch.

Here's an intersting article that touches on some of the back-door policies designed to create great optics for fan interest, despite being very misleading:
The Carolina Hurricanes are almost always last in NHL attendance, and that’s (at least partly) by design

Also, Detroit was running all kinds of sexy promos and contests for current season ticket holders this season but folks could only qualify if they renewed their season tickets. Clearly thats an issue for them and they'd have that data sitting in their lap while they were deciding their off-season game plan.

Roster is count as 15+6+2 = 23 players with Franzen. When Franzen put on LTIR, Hicketts called up as 7th D.

also If Holland will want to maximize the LTIR cap space, putting Rasmussen "down" and 925k Pope up for 1st day makes that trick.

I had earlier a mistake, where I was all the time counting a 24-man roster.

what are the chances you think Z hangs em up ? does that clear his cap for this season ?

It would clear 4M of that contract.

We can use the summer cap as much as 10% of full 79.5M cap = 7.95M maximum.

With Franzen already there, it would ease ~4M with Zetterberg (Franzen 3.954M+Zetterberg 3.995M), 2.11M left on the books.

If AA just got $3m, $4.5m strikes me as optimistic for Mantha. How many years do you figure that accounts for?

Are there any more recent news on Larkin? Earlier reports had him at around 5 million.

It's more of a conversation about how tight our cap could be and if a trade is on the horizon to stay under.

I know it's easy to just say "this guy doesn't know what he's talking about" but I would like to know what would be the plan going forward with possible moves.

Roster is count as 14+7+2 = 23 players with Franzen.

All in a nutshell.
- Roster with Hicketts, Frk and Franzen LTIR will set the salary cap for the season.
- Waiving Frk and calling up Rasmussen is the most realistic starting team.

Wings rocking the most expensive roster in the league once again and it's not just some smoke and mirrors either. Take away Franzen's cap hit and you are left with a 20 man roster and still have the most expensive roster in the league. That is absolutely obscene.

Who cares? If this team is as bad as you think it is a number of players will be dealt again at the deadline. Weren’t you an advocate of signing short term deals to later make trades with? Or obtain other team’s expensive players to obtain more draft picks and prospects?

Go watch Carolina or Arizona if you want to watch cheap, bad teams.

We had enough money to re-sign all of our players.

We had money to sign upper level UFA's (which you then complained about)

Who caarrreeeesss??

I care because it should be very obvious that the Wings have spent an obscene amount of money so that they can once again draft outside of the top three. Bad team building is bad.

A cheap bad team makes sense.

A ludicrously expensive bad team doesn't make any sense. (well it does if management is incompetent) But i don't think you believe that.

Many in here were saying how signing Vanek makes re-signing Larkin proablematic. Didn't seem to be problematic for the organization.

60 games of Vanek isn’t going to make much a difference. They’ll likely move him, Nyquist, Howard, Kronwall and possibly other players at the deadline.

The Red Wings won only 4 of the remaining 20 games last year. They’ll be near the bottom of the standings again. Don’t you worry.
