The Deadpool star has signed on to star in Legendary’s live-action movie adaptation of Pokemon, THR has learned.

Reynolds now joins Justice Smith, who will be seen in the upcoming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Big Little Liesactress Kathryn Newton in the movie, titled Detective Pikachu, that is based on the gaming franchise.

Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) is directing the project, which is due to start shooting mid-January in London.

The concept of Pokemon, which was initially a card-collecting game as well as anime, sees players acting as trainers who collect cute but powerful monsters called Pokemon in order to compete in battle tournaments.

Pikachu is a species of Pokemon, while Detective Pikachu the character is a peculiar sort from the Pikachu set, a self-styled investigator who is good at finding things. Reynolds will play the titular Detective Pikachu.

The story is kicked into gear when Smith's character's father is kidnapped, forcing the teen to team up with Pikachu in order to find him. Newton is a sassy journalist who helps them on their quest.

The role is said to be motion capture in nature, sources say.

Many details of the project are being kept off the grid, including the casting, which has been underway under the radar by the usually secretive Legendary.

The company has high hopes for the feature project, as the Pokemon franchise has sold 300 million video games worldwide, shipped 23.6 billion TCG cards to 74 countries, and has produced an animated series spanning 20 seasons.

Alex Hirsch and Nicole Perlman wrote the latest draft of the script. Universal Pictures is handling distribution of the live-action film outside Japan; Toho will handle distribution in Japan

You know, I saw two teasers today. This movie and Toy Story 4. This movie looks much more interesting than Toy Story 4 and I'm not sure if that's a bad thing or not. We live in interesting times.

Was never into the Pokeman thing, already in high school when it started but I must admit this looks like it could be funny.

reminds me a bit of that Married with Children knockoff show from the 90s with the Bobcat Goldthwait voiced rabbit in the basement.

I guess it could have been infinitely worse but I'm still not convinced to go see it. Edit: To be clear that looked much better than I thought possible.

Pokémon Go players alone will ensure this movie turns a profit.

Before seeing the trailer, I was sure Reynolds was a terrible fit for Pikachu. But they made Pikachu into a Reynolds character. And it works.

Hell, I'll be going just to see all the different Pokémon. I saw the first Pokémon movie in a dingy indy theatre way back when. There has to be a few of us who've taken our kids to those movies.
