2013 1st to start would be my guess.

This team, once healthy, should be a lock to make the playoffs in the 3-8 range and maybe win the division. After not having a 1st last year, I'd hate to lose this year's as well, but in this instance I think I could get behind this since our pick is likley to be in the 20s.

But therein lies the problem. A late round pick isn't worth as much so the Avs will want quite a bit more than that for O'Reilly IMO.

They apparently asked for Del Zotto and/or Stepan from New York.

Also reports they asked for Couturier from Philadelphia.

The reliable reports I've read have been a roster player, a top prospect, and a 1st. That's what Rutherford gave up for Jordan Staal.

So the plan is to trade assets so that we can pay a player 5 million a year to center our third line?

Hmmm, a player who overvalues his worth, has a meddling father, and wants to move on from a team that drafted him and is going about it the wrong way? I think I've seen a similar movie.

I like the player but not a fan of his expanding baggage collection.

Imagine for a second that we had a good defense and our second line consisted of Tim Brent, Chad LaRose and Drayson Bowman. Would you trade a 1st round pick and prospects for a defenseman of comparable impact to Ryan O'Reilly making $5M to play on the third pairing?

After all this drama over this guy I say we pass. We really need a good defensemen anyway. Once our injured guys come back I would be fine with our offensive lineup with a few pieces being tailored in our own organization (changes between the checkers and the canes). This guy wants too much to be a 3C.

Sorry. It sounded different when I was writing it, I meant that we would end up paying too much for him just to be a 3C.

Oh yeah, you were clear. I was just agreeing, we can't afford to pay him 2C money (if he somehow has it in his head he deserves that much) just to stick him on the third line.

TBH, the reason we don't need to pursue him is the same reason that Colorado isn't going to keep him -- he apparently doesn't have a realistic sense of where he belongs in the salary cap food chain.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I'd take O'Reilly IF we could afford his salary and he could probably play on the 2nd line next year. The question is can the Canes afford him AND re-sign Semin if they want to (and go after Marc Staal as a UFA after that if they want to).

I believe so. By the time we can acquire Staal, our aging vets will have probably signed at cheaper cap hits than their current ones. Epsecially Ward, who's shown to let in easy goals even with a capable defense. In order for this to happen they MUST get rid of EITHER Gleasons or Ruutus contract.

I get that we've got 3 of 4 and are trying to complete the collection, but is there any basis, rumor or actual fact, besides "but you know we're going to" for the Canes actually acquiring Marc Staal? If not I think planning our entire cap situation around one UFA in 2015-2016 is a little premature, especially if that means suggesting that we wait until THEN to address this D.

I think that until that opportune moment, rolling with Jokel, Smurf, Faulk, Gleas, Harry, and Sangs is good enough.

Sanguinetti impressing me as of late. :o:

Take him if he's available. Worst case you flip him for a D later. Seems like we'd put him at 2C an put a Staal on a wing. This team has always been better when it's been deep at C. With how Eric gets kicked out of the circle always good to have another C at the wing.

Of course there's not rumor or actual fact, but 1) that never gets in the way of discussions on these boards and 2) JR is if anything, a creature of habit. Not unreasonable to think he'll go after him.

In terms of planning the cap situation, it doesn't matter if it's Marc Staal or some other defensemen, the general consensus is that team needs to beef up the blue line so it's fair to consider that when discussing proposals on here.
