Going to miss prime beast mode Getzlaf

but will always remember him not showing up when it truly mattered

and the rest of those teams while I’m at it

He’s got like the 5th most playoff points since coming into the league and while he had some late series no shows (under BB who is a notorious choker) he had two absolutely dominant runs in 2009 and 2017 to go along with several good runs which should put to rest any question of him not raising his game when it matters.

Getzlaf was never the main reason the ducks didn’t get it done from 2010-2017. The main reasons:

1) coaching
2) Lack of a dominant defenseman
3) goaltending at times let us down
4) Perry(was the bigger culprit)

That second one can’t get emphasized enough. We went to 7 against two cup champs in LA and Chicago. The biggest difference and the deciding factor in terms of the rosters each team iced was that they had Doughty/Keith logging truckloads of minutes where as we had a mid 30s Beauchemin doing all the heavy lifting.

perry? he disappeared in the '13 series against detroit and '16 against nashville

but aside from that, he was pretty good in the playoffs. i wouldn't call him the biggest culprit.

11 pts in 13 games in '14
18 pts in 16 games in '15
11 pts in 17 games in '17

how do you blame one player for how they completely shit the bed right out of the gate in both the 2014 and 2015 game 7s? if anything, that's just a case of the team not being mentally prepared

I didn’t call him the biggest culprit, I called him the 4th biggest culprit (reason). Which to me is fair. I have defended him a lot but he was making elite forward money for a lot of those playoff runs and the expectation was more than just being pretty good. We needed him to be a dominant goal scorer consistently

09 and 15 were the only 2 years where you could look at it and say he was objectively who we needed him to be. 14 was okay. 13 and 16 were gross. 17 he was already in decline so it was better than expected.

This was from a “why is Toews considered clutch when Getzlaf has better numbers” question in 2016. It’s not just a couple Game 7’s, it’s pretty much every elimination game he’s a no show over that span. Win OR lose.

It's because Toews may be a no-show at the start of series, but he comes through at the end of series and closes them out. Look at his production in elimination games (either to close out a team or to not be eliminated), and his record in elimination games. He's the very definition of clutch. His last 4 years: 6G, 15A, 21P, +6 (16 games)

St. Louis 3A, -1 (2 games)
Tampa Bay 0p, even (1 game)
Anaheim 2G, +3 (2 games)
Minnesota 2A, even (1 game)
Nashville 1G 2A, +1 (1 game)
LA 1G, 1A, -1(2 games)
Minnesota 0P, even (1 game)
St. Louis 1G, +1 (1 game)
Boston 1G, 1A, +1 (1 game)
LA 2A, +2 (1 game)
Detroit 2A, -1 (2 games)
Minnesota 2A, +1 (1 game)

Now look at Getzlaf's production in elimination games. It's really the opposite of clutch. He disappears at the end of series.

Nashville 0P, -1 (2 games)
Chicago 1A, -4(2 games)
Calgary 0P, even (1 game)
Winnipeg 0P, even (1 game)
LA 1A, -3 (2 games)
Dallas 0P, even (1 game)
Detroit 1A, -1 (2 games)

It isn't just 4 or 5 games. There are 11 elimination games in the last 4 years alone. Here's what Getzlaf has managed : 11 GP, 0G, 3A, 3P, -9. Compared to 16 GP 6G,15A, 21P, +6.

Why are we assigning different levels of importance to games in a series? They all count the same, the subtext given to later games is just a psychological narrative.
