Holy **** Coop is getting smarter.
I think Coop has learned a lot from the Brenden Morrow fiasco. Just because a player is a well-liked veteran who has put up respectable numbers several seasons ago doesn't justify a roster spot over other players who fit their role and/or the team's needs better. "We need a goal? Brenden, you with your 3 goals and 5 assists in 70 games this season, take that shift, Drouin sit down!" - this will never happen again to Cooper.
Man. I feel for the dude. He would have been well worth it if he kept his first season production, but everyone knew that contract was bad when it was given to him.
Not his fault that he got offered too much, but it's gotta hurt for a vet to get that talk.
It's best for the team, though. He's just not worth keeping guys like Joseph off the ice.
I agree. He signed that contract as a gritty top-6 two-way forward putting up 20 goals and 50 points. Things have changed drastically. Not only did he suffer from an endless string of injuries which in turn took its toll on his production and performance, but the team got a lot deeper and a lot better in the meantime.
Again, that's not saying Callahan is useless or worthless and he might play a role in the playoffs when the game gets more physical and there's less space and speed.
But in this final stretch of the regular season we need speedy, energizing guys like Joseph or Erne in the lineup. We don't lose because we didn't block enough shots, we lose when our bottom-6 is not dangerous or dictating the pace, let alone the secondary scoring disappears.
