When did this “rebuild” start? Did it start after 2015 or did it this year or the year before? How about this there was never really a rebuild but Stan just made a series of bad decisions that has the team where it is right now, is that an option in your head?
I tend to take Ronald Macdonald at his word that there is no rebuild, they just couldn’t save the team, they thought that Q was the problem and now they are realizing that Stan.
I think the rebuild started after the Nashville series, but Stan wasn’t allowed to go all out because McDonough still wanted to pretend this team was competing in order to sell tickets.
If Stan really thought this team would be competitive last year and this year, he wouldn’t have sold of a superstar forward. He would’ve milked every last drop out of Hjalmarsson. He would’ve signed someone more significant than Manning and Kunitz.
I don’t know why Q wasn’t fired in the offseason, that doesn’t make sense to me. But I think Stan knew all this was coming. I think he knew the window had closed after Nashville and he’d need to rebuild this team. I think he wasn’t allowed to be open about that because of a directive from his boss, McDonough.
That said, I’m not sitting here and saying Stan is the only guy capable of doing it. He’s not some magical hero in my mind, despite what you’d like to believe.
EDIT: Also, I do believe a rebuild can happen around Toews and Kane as they are still young enough to still be effective once the young defensemen develop. I don’t think Keith, Seabrook, or Crawford will play any sort of significant role once this team is competitive again.
