Big thing in that sentence: COULD.

But he probably wont.
And?
Malkin has as good a chance as anyone on the squad, and the sole fact he's being considered is an incredible accomplishment.

TSN's headline for Russia really sucks:

Crosby's closest rival? After the past few weeks it's more like Crosby is Ovechkin's closest rival, but one should expect nothing less from TCN (The Crosby Network).

LOL, TCN :biglaugh:

I think Malkin will be one of the LEADERS of the Russian squad.

Krikunov's interview it is clear that no Brylin is his desire, while Zhamy on the team is Bure's. I have a suspiscion that Krikunov was clamoring for Zinoviev. Bykov is also Krikunov's idea.

And he claims that he will be alble to substitute palyers untill very last moment: "Sokolov will be there if one of the three does not play well" :dunno:

Den, could you please translate that for us Sharks fans? Also, how has he been this year in the RSL?

He says he won't go in a taxi squad and thinks he deserves a place on the main roster. Then he says the bulk of the team is NHLers and if he had stayed in SJ he probably would have better chances of making the team. Asked if he will go to the WC if invited he says, no, definitley no, nor to the Sweden Hockey Games

Kirkunov wanted Taratukhin I think. Bure wanted Zhamnov. This team was built on compromise rather than unanimous decisions. Bure got Zhamnov instead of Taratukhin/Zvinovjev while Kirkunov got Kharitonov over Samsonov.

They are also under the assumption that non injured players can be taken out of the roster and named a squad of 8 players as the taxi squad for now. They hinted that the roster is likely to change. Im just thinking that if someone gets taken out after making the team.... they probably would get pretty upset.

Korolyuk overracted by saying im no going to the World CHampionships 100%, he brightened up a tad when told he was a substitute at this point. Brylin gave a very classy interview, great patriotism.

There's a wonderful line here

which says that "one of the managers said in private that Sokolov will go to the OG". What the hell does this mean???

The exact translation was: "A person close close to the management of the national team, after the press conference had finnished hinted to us that Sokolov is going to the Olympics afterall. "But I didn't tell you this" he added.

Classic. I think it was a move not to upset any NHL goalie by not naming them to the squad. Bryzgalov is injured now though, they may use this as an excuse to bump him off.

Kirkunov said Zhamnov will have to improve his game to remain on the roster.

I hope Sokolov won't get anywhere near the Olympics! Nothing against him personnaly, but let's face it, he's unstable...

He basically said he thinks he should have gone. Was surprised Morozov and Sokolov didnt make it and that Zhamnov made it. Said he was going to concentrate on helping his team this year and wouldnt go to World Championships or Sweden games if selected. He knew he probably wasn't going to make it as far back as a week ago but held out some hope and was dissapointed when he saw the roster. He was iffy on his position as a injury replacement guy, wounded pride or something. He also said this team will bring back a medal for sure and that he would be cheering them on.

He is tied for 6th in RSL scoring with Grigorenko at the present moment with 10 goals and 15 assists in 30 games playing for a weak team. Malkin, Mozyakin, Morozov, Antipov, and Zvinovjev are ahead of him.

It does not matter, neither Bryza nor Max will see any action. But Bryza makes more sense just because he has a future (no need to upset him), and Max does not: he'll be 37 by the next OG and probably won't go even as a 3-d goalie. Of course, if there's a chance that Max can challenge for #2 position I would take him just to reward for the years of service....

why does kirkunov think he can change the roster and remove non-injured players?

why does he love kharitonov so much?

why is morozov not on this team?

what are morozov's chances of being added?

what are the odds of zhamnov or kharitonov being removed?

please help me.

1. Bure thinks so as well. *I* believe this is largely because they resubmit the rosters for the actual Olympics again in January or Febuary sometime. This is just deadline imposed by the NHL in accordance to the IIHF.

2. Kharitonov proved himself at the World Championships and Rosno Cup tournament. He plays for Dynamo, on the same line as Maxim Sushinsky: Russia's best right winger. Although Kharitonov has not good put up good numbers this year, or overly impressive numbers any year, he has showed enough chemistry with Sushinsky to make the team. He is a very good passer, and somewhat of a defensive penalty kill specialist as well... something this Russia team is lacking. Yet I think the deciding factor is that Kirkunov, apart being coach of the national team is also coach of Kharitonov+Sushinsky's Dynamo and wants his boys at the Olympics.

3. Lets take a look at right wing on the Russian squad as Morozov is a right winger. There are many people that believe that Morozov deserved to be on the team ahead of Afinogenov. Yet others will argue that although Afinogenov is not proficient in the NHL, he has experience playing with Ovechkin+Malkin and has been the hero at both the Olympics and World Championships. Although Morozov lead the league in scoring last year with all the NHL players and is leading the league in scoring at the present moment: most people would agree Sushinsky is better. Viktor Kozlov is a different type of player from Morozov and will play defence. Then again, some people believe Korolyuk (another right winger who didn't make it) belonged on the team ahead of Morozov. In any case, it came down to the addition of Bykov and Russia deciding to bring 8 defencemen and only 12 forwards. If Russia selected the customary 13 forwards, Morozov would have made the team as he was the last guy out of a spot.

4.. Morozov's chances of being added prior to the tournament are decent but overshadowed by Sokolov or Brylin's chances of being added... which are VERY good. If a defenceman underperforms though: Morozov is the most likely guy to be included. Chances are Morozov makes the 3 man taxi squad, and that a winger gets injured during the tournament and he gets at least some playing time.

5. If Kharitonov gets injured or starts performing horribly: he is gone. Yet overall he is most likely going to stick since Russia told Samsonov to say he wasn't going or lost Samsonov due to declination. In either case, with no Samsonov in the picture on the reserve list, Kharitonov's chances of staying on the team improve dramatically. Korolyuk is the only guy that remains on the list that can play either left wing or right wing... but given his negative comments to the press after he wasn't selected: I think he lowered his chances of replacing Kharitonov quite a bit. Krikunov said it loud in clear for the other case: if Zhamnov does not improve his game: he is out of there!! Krikunov has never seen Zhamnov play. The only reason Zhamnov is on the roster is because he is good friends with Bure who expects him to pick up the slack. However if he continues at his current pace with 1 goal all season, he will get cut. This is likely since Zhamnov hasnt looked impressive at all. His likely replacements are either Brylin: who Krikunov openly opposes since he thinks he is just a regular unimpressive 3rd liner or for experience with playing with Kharitonov+Sushinsky: Taratukhin. Nobody expected this guy to get consideration and Bure probably opposes him, but Krikunov is a little weird and likes RSL players. Most fans would have mentioned or picked Zvinovjev but he has gotten in trouble with the national team before and most likely isnt selected because he would fail the drug test and get the team stripped of their medals if they should win.

6. Consider yourself helped.

As far as I understand changes can be made only in case of injuries or when a guy declines. Which suggest the following nasty way of changing anybody on the roster: if the coach doesn't like somebody's shape, talk him into making a public statment that "I decline for this or that reason" (like Samsonov and Fedorov did) - get the guy you want in his place!!! Nasty, but should work in principle. :D

thanks slitty for your response.

some/questions comments

1. im dont think the dec 22 deadline is just an nhl imposed deadline. the iihf site itself says that rosters can only be changed now in case of injury or exceptional reasons. i think den is right about this. why do you guys think that federov and samsonov would were asked to say that they were pulling out. i dont see how this could make any sense. why would kirkunov and bure not want these players there? they would both really help the team. i was assuming that federov didnt want to play for bure after bure stole his girl, and i have no idea what samsonov's deal is, but i dont see why kirkunov wouldnt want him on the team. he's having a great year, has great offensive skils.

2. i have been watching some of last years world championship games, and i am really unimpressed w kharitonov. he did nothing playing w kovalev and datsyuk, he leaves the zone early looking for the breakaway pass, and seems weak in the corners and in the front of the net. he appears to be similar to samsonov, but not as skilled offensively. i cannot understand how they could rather have kharitonov than samsonov.

3. i was watching the quarterfinal game against finland. kovalev did not make it on to the ice during the 10 min ot period. can anybody explain that?

4. i am assuming malkin will play w sushinksy and kharitonov. i think this is a terrible mistake. malkin and sushinksy are more playmakers than scorers. kharitonov is not a sniper, not someone who will dominate in front to get rebounds or garbage goals, or someone who get the puck out of the corner. this seems like a waste of malkin's talents to play w kharitonov.

5. what do you expect the lines to be? i am hoping that ovechkin - datsyuk - kovalev will be the top line. i think their talents will complement each other well. ovechkin was born to play with players like this. he will get the puck out of the corner, drive hard to the net, and will open up a lot of space for the other two to dance.

6. ovechkin's goal in the bronze medal game walking around mattias nortstrom was spectacular.

7. i agree russia needs some penalty kill specialists. there could be a ton of penalties called and games could come down to speacial teams. i am just worried that kharitonov is not good enough to do the job; he is very small, does not a have a great reach, and seems weak on the puck. against nhlers like heatley and nash i dont think he'll fair well. succeeding at the rosno cup and against nhlers in turin are very different things. who else do you see doing the penalty killing? datsyuk? kovalev? zhamnov? i'm very concerned about their pk forwards. it would be nice to see brylin and federov here.

8. explain the bykov decision. what's he doing on this team ahead of tverdovsky, kalinin, or even the other rsl dmen who were at the world's, or a young kid w much better numbers like kulyash.

9. who are going to play the points on the pp? gonchar, zhitnik, and markov are three spots, whose the other dman? or do you think they will use a forward back there? i think kovalev is more effective on the point on the pp. it seems kirkunov and russian coaches in general dont like to do this.

thanks in advance for any help with this.
