I can't imagine many teams lining up to take Westbrook's contract. This part of Shams' report is interesting:
Westbrook, who has three years and $123 million remaining on his deal, has expressed the sentiment to Houston officials, sources said. Westbrook has informed team officials that he has been uneasy about the team's accountability and culture, and has a desire to return to his prior, floor-general role in Oklahoma City.
Russell Westbrook wants out of Houston: Sources
Sure sounds like one year playing next to his buddy was more than enough for him. He now wants everything running through him once again.
Sam Presti is a genius.
He got first round picks later in the decade for Westbrook and then the king's ransom for Paul George. Houston has the right to swap picks with them in 2021 or 2025 and two unprotected firsts in 2024 and 2026.
There's a non-zero chance the Thunder have multiple years where they have 2 lottery picks in one season multiple times. That's just ****ed. All the while the Rockets and Clippers likely have no rings to show for it.
It was an awful deal because they gave up the better PG in the deal and don't have control of all of those picks but Morey did make sure they're protected in case things go terribly, which is where it looks they're headed. All of those picks are at least lightly protected:
2021 first round draft pick to Oklahoma City (swap, Oklahoma City or Miami incoming)
Oklahoma City will receive the two most favorable of its 2021 1st round pick, Miami's 2021 1st round pick and Houston's 2021 1st round pick protected for selections 1-4 and Houston will receive the least favorable of the three
2024 first round draft pick to Oklahoma City
Houston's 2024 1st round pick to Oklahoma City protected for selections 1-4; if this pick falls within its protected range and is therefore not conveyed, then Houston will instead convey its 2024 2nd round pick and 2025 2nd round pick to Oklahoma City
2025 first round draft pick to Oklahoma City (swap, Oklahoma City incoming)
Oklahoma City has the right to swap its 2025 1st round pick for Houston's 2025 1st round pick protected for selections 1-10 or the L.A. Clippers' 2025 1st round pick (if the Houston pick falls within its protected range and is therefore not conveyable, then Houston's obligation to Oklahoma City will be extinguished)
2026 first round draft pick to Oklahoma City
Houston's 2026 1st round pick to Oklahoma City protected for selections 1-4; if this pick falls within its protected range and is therefore not conveyed, then Houston will instead convey its 2026 2nd round pick to Oklahoma City
