Didn't we go after Stastny when he signed with StL? He was among the top FAs that year. Jokinen was the top C available at the time, IIRC. I think we have been reportedly in on 1 or 2 more highly rated UFAs.

Seems as though we have been after C's forever.

I share the opinion that being an unattractive FA destination has done us more good than harm.

We made a low ball offer for Stats from what I heard. Have to read into it more.

Absolutely not. Staal is not a good fit with those guys. He's a plodding PP specialist now. 1 goal in his last 15 playoff games. Total non-factor last year.

I'd sooner give Copp more ice than make that kind of deal.

He has 37 pts this year. 7 came on the PP. Not exactly a PP specialist.

As I recall we made an offer = or very close to the one StL made. We were on the short list at the end. That is my memory of it, which I can't vouch for.

I am loving our name being involved with high profile players, that said I would urge caution in price they pay for a rental. The juice may not be worth the squeeze.

He's just a different type of winger and I think it would be a mistake to just think of him as a winger, think of him as Bergeron type.

He'll drive the possession like crazy with ability to score at ppg, and he's only 26y. He's a guy who can be the guy on that 2nd line and make the #2C issue go away, now& longterm.

100%

Normally I would never sign off on a winger but Stone drives a line and carries players like a high end two way centre does (good call on Bergy). He is also one year older than Scheifele and Lowry so that is a great age. Now and then a winger comes along (Patrick Kane) that is the straw that stirs the drink on a team and that is Stone.

Stone is at Peak level right now... Connor is rising and will continue improving. Look where we are with Connor now.... can only keep going up

I love Connor And he will get better but he is miles apart from Stone in everything but point production. He is a scoring winger and he may or may not be a line driving defensive beast one day but Stone is now. I really like Connor and that is why I am hoping he can return an asset like Pesce.

Hard to say if that has any bearing on what he wants. His wife goes to school in Florids, might be a bigger factor for him.

That's hard to say too. Don't want to do any speculating about his private life, but he seems to be getting along OK so far. My best guess is that it is about money more than anything else, but there are other factors. Winning and a good organization are probably on that list somewhere.

Most of these trade suggestions involve us giving up a 1st + for a rental. Would it not make more sense to trade from a position we have in abundance (wingers) for a position we need (center), and trade for a player who is under contract for a few years. I have no specific players in mind, but if this is our core (debatable), then anyone not on the list could be considered available:
Scheifele
Wheeler
Connor
Laine
Ehlers
Lowry

Leaves these available:
Lemieux
Petan
Appleton
Perreault
Little (ignoring NMC)
Roslovic?
Copp?

It might take someone from your core list to get what we want/need. I'm OK with that for the right player.

At this time of year all attention goes to the rentals. For no good reason. It is just a feeding frenzy.

We should be trying to land a C for the long haul. That might mean losing a key player, but we are bringing in a key player. At the same time we should be thinking of Trouba's future. We don't want to move him for futures while we are chasing a cup, but we could move him for a player who brings = help in that chase.

Absolutely, normally you'd want to have a C you build around but Stone is an exception.

& He wouldn't have to be the guy with Scheifele on team, imagine having Stone run the 2nd line, and run with prime Laine for the next 6-8 years?

I get a laugh out of the main boards trade forum regarding Stone to the Jets.....some of the hilarious demands from other fans from the Jets......not even worth responding to. TDL can’t come so enough to end all those silly posts

Yup, Staal is on pace for about 54 points on a not very good team...scored 141 points over the last two seasons.
He'd look great on a line with Ehlers and Wheeler.

I guess as a Mod you are required to read them  I'm under no such obligation and mostly avoid the trade board though if bored I will wade in on occasion, and mostly regret it. I'll admit I'm very intrigued about the possibility of acquiring Stone, though I think he goes for the standard 1st, 2nd tier prospect and another throw in (Petan?).

You’re right.....I’m expected to read them at least to a degree (not complaining). My favourite was Laine for Stone

Bryan little has more goals, assists and a higher points per game since the 14-15 season.

That’s 3 metrics right there.

Prime 26-29 year old Bryan Little has better stats than developing 22-25 year old Hayes, cool. What does it look like with Hayes sitting in his prime and Little leaving his? It's not close.

Past 3 years 5v5:
Hayes: 35 goals, 81 points
Little: 27 goals, 72 points

That's with Little having much, much better quality of linemates and Hayes having 77%(!) defensive zone starts to Little's 25%. Also with Hayes having a higher quality of competition.

Stone would be imo the best winger on the team. Maybe Wheeler is better this year, but even that I'm not sure of.

If we are trading one of KC or Ehlers it better ****ing be KC. He's a good player, but Ehlers is clearly better and is locked in to a nice 6x6 deal. If KC wants a long-term deal after this year he's looking at 7+ based off of the Nylander extension.

I disagree that Ehlers is better than KC. I'd hate to get rid of either of them BUT it's about the Playoffs. Ehlers did nothing last year and maybe he needed some time. We'll see. Just saying...
