I do think Surixon might be right that Chevy will appease Jets fans with the announcement of his first big FRA signing tomorrow. Could also see see some smaller moves Saturday (Petan and/or Dano) for pick replacements.

I wonder if the strategy is to get 2019 picks so that he gives himself some more ammo for next years TD if he feels he needs to make some moves at the time.

Interesting idea. Chevy being methodical over reactive serves us well over the long term.

Crunching the numbers again (Especially in light of the rumored 6 x 6 deal to Helle) the Jets are going to have to move out at least a 4 million contract even with a Morrissey bridge to fit everyone in. That is unless Chevy is ok with a 2 to 3 million dollar bonus overage. Given both Wheeler and Laine are due raises next season I highly doubt he even contemplates that.

Edit:

So people who want a big trade you are likely going to get one at some point this summer.

Ellis is a far better player than Myers. Both only have 1 more year left but Ellis is $3 M less this coming season.

They were saying last night on the Sportsnet show Ellis was not available to Edmonton in a trade.

I'd love him to look at 2019 picks, if he's in the market for picks. Value will be better.

I agree that he should hang onto Petan for another year... gives another year to assess him, and more flexibility if they need to move a vet like Perreault.

Probably some savings on injuries next year, but they are going to be very tight on salaries. I agree that they will likely need to move out a salary, with Myers and Perreault being the most obvious candidates.

I wonder if Chevy could swing any magic with Mason to shed salary? Would a team with cap space take him in a trade if we throw in Petan. Our return may be minimal but then he could sign a backup on the cheap. I haven't looked who's available but just another thought.

From what I remember he's pretty adamant about not carrying over any bonuses to next season.

If he seriously looking at fitting in Stastny, Lowry should be traded imo. Too much money/value for a fourth line centre. Offer Myers & Lowry to Edmonton, then we get #10 plus a decent add.

Hopefully we get a steal of an RFA signing announced tomorrow.
That's one thing Chevy has been unreal at, is the Contracts he gets. I don't see Chevy giving Helly the HF rumoured contract, Chevy can do better, and I'm Hellys biggest advocate and have been for while.

Except Lowry doesn't take 4th line match ups. Home or away his line plays the most minutes against one of the other teams top 2 lines, and Scheifele's line plays against the other.

No, don't trade Lowry. That would be a bad idea.

I don't think he can do much better, $6 million would put his cap hit at a tie for 7th among goalies with Crawford and Schneider. The top 10 is rounded out by Varlamov making $5.9 million. I would argue 6 million is probably below or at the low end of his market value given where the cap is this year. Paying him $6 million would be essentially be paying him like an above average goalie but not like a superstar goalie so I would be ok with that.

I would like to see your numbers if you have them available somewhere.

I just roughly did the following:

Petan, Dano, Tanev, Morrow 1x1m
Armia 2x2m
Lowry 2x3m
Trouba 4x6m
Morrissey 7x5m
Hellebuyck 6x6m

With those signings I'm less than 1m over the cap with potential bonuses. I feel those contracts are fair, but there may be some wriggle room. Depending on how all of them go they might be able to get everyone signed below the cap even with potential bonuses. If so then we don't really need to move anyone out this offseason. Next offseason it's looking like we'll definitely have to move out Myers and Perreault though. I personally think it would be prudent to move Myers out this offseason with his value being high after a successful year and only one year remaining on his contract. Can't see Chevy moving him though unless an offer he couldn't refuse came along.

I also feel that players like Armia who are between top 6 and ELC/league minimum contracts are going to have to be cap casualties moving forward.
