Bouchard still needs to learn and practice in his defensive zone coverage....he has improved alot this last partial AHL season and his trajectory has me excited --maybe we will get the Jay Bo that never was--
Hopefully practicing at the NHL level and learning against these guys he starts to sporadically getting injected into the line up and by the end of the season becomes a better all around option that Barrie.

So to answer ur number 4...(not sure about ur other 3....maybe we carry 23 + 6?)

Nurse (occasional brain fart but steadily improving) Bear (Sophomore risk but steady+tantalizing upside)

Jones (risk-not a second pair yet) Larsson (wonky back-high risk?)

Russell (not here for a long time) Barrie (peeking out of dog house-"I want to fly coach")

Lagesson (am i good enough) Bouchard (not quite ready--multiple cups of coffee)

Risk is so high. Makes sense to bring in a steady vet presense. I know ur going to say that Hamonic is a free agent for a reason. Yes he needs fixing. Most of his bad decisions were in the O zone. I think he can be remade with some hard work and fairly quickly. Hope Holland gives him two years. There is a defensive specialist with a great first pass and excellent transition hidden in Hamonic! Right now he pinches in Ozone at wrong times, he makes questionable reads on developing plays, he frequently cant get his shot through, and wilts occaisionally (graphically) under pressure. By limiting his responsibilities most of this can be disciplined out of him.

I don't buy the Hamonic thing as the oilers will be signing Bear and unless they are moving Larsson then there is not place in our top 3 RD currently. Bear, Larsson and Barrie will all play before Hamonic. If you can trade Chiasson and something for an upgrade over Russell and Bear for minimal extra money above the 2.15m then sure. I don't think it is realistic in this cap environment where we will get a player better than what we have and get rid of money

From what the Media has said, Khaira was our best PKer, and not just on the team, but in the league too. He was very solid on the PK and helped us get a Top 5 PK team with our league best PP unit. He is too valuable to give up right now. And I think Tippett/Holland know that
I call BS on this. Khaira-Nuge was solid duo on PK but there really wasn

Do we maybe want to flood the D corps with a bunch of options in the event someone doesn't perform or injuries?

The GM in order to attract people (on a one year covid contract) likely has to give an expectation of ice time. Feel for the younger guys watching the team bring in more depth but building a winning team is more important at this point in Mcdraihopkmamotos careers.

If Holland doesn't want to pay Nuge 7 Million +, would you be in favour of a trade in season, rather than losing him for nothing to a team that will pay? And if so, what would that look like?

Could Nuge and Bear get you Laine?? At 23 yrs old signing Laine long term would be a lot less risky than RNH.

Or do we just sign Nuge after the expansion draft, so we don't have to protect him.

Delay signing him imo. We shouldnt pay him market value, since probably some team has ideas that he could be their major center acquistion. Hes at an age where his regression could start at any moment. So waiting makes sense in case it happens this year.

We need to be firm with him because we have bigger priorities for future cap space than RNH.

Yaknow, I love Nuge and Bear and I want RNH to be an Oiler forever, but if by some happenstance we don't resign him, god forbid, if Bouchard shows well and we could pull Laine for McDavid I'd do it.

I doubt it's a possibility but I'd think long and hard.

A poster on the main boards said he's heard some inside info that Holland may be talking to Madison Bowey too.

He'd be a decent taxi squad rightie.

All your 6th/7th D belong to us.

Seriously, what a crazy amount of depth if that happens:

Nurse-Bear
Russell-Barrie
Jones-Larsson
Koekkoek-Bouchard
Lagesson-Bowey

You have to think Tippett can cobble together an NHL quality top six from that group.

If he adds Bowey too you'd have to think he's concerned about Covid outbreaks in the team. It makes sense. If a couple of injuries happen and then a few guys get Covid you could be down 5 defensemen.

I would note that this does not rule out the Oilers signing Hamonic as well.

It's nice to have some insurance for the taxi squad too.

It's probably unlikely guys like Lagesson or Bowey(or even Koekkoek if they do sign a Hamonic/Hutton) would get picked up off waivers, but there's basically no downside to having more guys to lessen that blow if they do.

We have a glut of forwards and defensemen. With the expanded roster, the back to backs and covid uncertainity, I think this is a good move by Holland. Better to have more players than not enough.
