you better watch out... you better not cry..
Ales Hemsky is coming back to town!

Getting Marleau makes more sense but because it does, he will go to Flames :(

The Oilers are as deep as a kiddy pool.

Buying out Pouliot for mid-season cap relief doesn't make sense to me. It's saying we'll take an extra year of dead cap to rid ourselves of our best PKer, a player likely to rebound to some degree offensively, so we can have 6M in March instead of 4M.

Something has to be up.

To be honest I hope its somewhat quiet. July 1 is when GMs make stupid signings out of desperation.

Yes but it's also usually when most of the quality UFAs are taken as well. If we're sitting here in a week and Chia hasn't signed anyone of significance... Hoo boy.

I just dont see anyone on the Market that really makes sense to grab on the first day.

Edit* meaning one of the big signings

I would take back Hemsy on a 2 year deal. Let Pujlujarvi play 1 more season in the AHL.

He could sign Marleau for 4 mil per for 2 years, and Stone for the same contract. You will still find the typical posters b*******

Yep. There's a lot of hypocrisy with the same people.

Since the Larsson-Hall trade, I've learned to remain a tad bit more patient

Its usually when most of the quality UFAs are overpaid. We've been doing that every year, and its adding up.

Its very rare that you get a quality UFA for a reasonable amount on July 1st. Will you be happy if we overpay someone? The only hope we have is if we play the "come play with Mcdavid" discount card.

Shoring up our wings and defense? That would be quite novel, actually.

I recognize my status as a negative poster but I was actually quite positive about the moves Chia made last summer, even defending the Hall/Larsson trade.

What are our potential options as vets who would want to win and could be had.

My list:
Bonino
Thornton
Marleau
Williams
Pirri (not really a vet but maybe is cheap)
Hainsey
Girardi
Hartnell

Those are really the only viable options I could see but I do not like the idea of Girardi but the others I could live with as long as they are cheap enough that whatever term we have to pay is manageable.

What would your maximum offer be for any of those players? And which ones would you not even offer anything even if they were interested in coming?

The Flames can have Versteeg, he's pretty much just a power play specialist at this point.

We don't need a small winger that doesn't hit, doesn't kill penalties and scored at a worse rate than Kassian last season (at even strength).

My list:
Bonino - No offer, assume high contract Cap and length
Thornton - Novelty - Really think hes going to SJ, show is to get extra yr on contact
Marleau - 2 yr 3.5 M[/B]
Williams - 2 yr 3.5 suspect he is not interested
Pirri - Good pick up, cheap offer 1 yr 1.1
Hainsey - No offer
Girardi - No offer
Hartnell - 1 yr 3 mill

Until we sign mcdavid and Leon we need to be careful. I would rather have him quit then give a bad contract out. Looks like are about to tie 22 mill a year into two players. We need to be very thrifty

Well unfortunately the Russell and Lucic contracts have set a not-so-great precedent. I would hope Chia can sign a value UFA for cheaper than market value but I don't think that's going to happen. I'm hoping another prized UFA falls into his lap.

marleau-a perplexing combination of old and fast. i dont think hes a fit as much as people like the idea. he's 38 and never played for another team.....i feel like there is a dropoff coming if not an adjustment period. don't need to spend this much? (4m)

williams-a good playoff pickup and plays the rw. not sure i want to spend over 2 million. (3m?)

pirri-sure. i'm in the mood for a well targeted reclamation. (1)

josefson-see above (1)

desjardins-depth center is a need (1)

upshall/king-fiesty depth guys. (1)

kulikov-probably not but he could come cheap. (2?)

ahl tweener d-yes please.

ahl tweener winger-sure.

Dark horse names Chia is looking at:

Rick Nash
Matt Niskanen
Alex Killorn
Tomas Tatar

I could also see him offering Hanzal a short term deal.
