YOW
A new season is upon us, which also means we all need a refresher on the site rules.

1. Flaming. Do not insult other posters. Stick to the facts. Attack the post, not the poster.

2. Trolling. Yes, even though you are a sens fan, you can still be trolling on the sens board.

3. Spam. No "me 2" or "this" posts. No image/video/smiley only posts. And for the love of god, please do not ask for a stream in a GDT unless the puck has already dropped. I can guarantee that if there is one out there, someone will have posted it by then. Either properly respond to a post, or do not post at all. Posts such as "Looooool" are spam/trolling and will be dealt with accordingly.

4. Offensive posts. Keep your language/pictures/videos at a level you are comfortable saying in front of a 10 year old kid or your 80 year old grandmother. Special note to race, sexuality, and religion-related offensive posts, which are guaranteed infractions.

5. Advertising. No one cares about your blog, and even if we did, we dont need you to advertise it here. If you have tickets to sell, take it to the stickied tickets thread.

6. No disclosure of personal information. Treat everyone like a stranger on the internet, even if you know them irl. Do not disclose information about another poster here, and do not disclose information from any pm's to the public forum.

7. Copyrighted material. When you post an article, post just part of it, we'll follow the link if we want to read the rest.

8. Warez. No talk of illegal ways to get anything. No links to illegal software download. No talk about illegal download sites.

9. Off-Topic Posting: Stay on the topic of the thread. It's not that hard. No homework threads. All political discussion is to be done on the Politics forum (http://hfboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=160).

10. Mod Abuse. Yay, you got an infraction/warning/pm from a mod. No one cares. Do not disclose the fact that you got one or express your anger towards the mod(s) in public forum. If you have an issue, CrimsonSkorpion is the team leader for this board and you can contact any other admin as well, or you can send an email to [email protected].

this is your warning. If you want to be extra-careful, read up on the full rules here: http://hfboards.com/faq.php?faq=vb3_board_faq#faq_forum_rules

for the first few weeks, we will be handing out infractions like candy. The offseason is over and we can leave all those bad habits behind.

Thank you.

UPDATE: November 1/2011

Hi folks,

The number of spam posts are becoming more increasingly noticeable on these boards. Posts that have no value to the topic being discussed in the future will be issued infractions. A few examples of these types of posts include, but are not limited to: "Me too" "This thread worthy?" "I agree (without preceding an explanation).

This reminder also serves to people who choose to reply to these posts. If your name is not in light blue, purple or dark blue, you should not being acting like a moderator then. If you feel like a post has violated the site rules (which can be found HERE )
report the post. Please, do not respond to the post. This only creates a larger issue for moderators to deal with and brings down the overall quality of these boards.

Thanks,
The Mod Squad

UPDATE: November 28/2011

The amount of OT threads is starting to become quite excessive, if you want to ask a simple question like "Where do you go to school?" or "Where to find _____?", use the Sens Lounge thread to ask the question.

Also, please familiarize yourselves with the "Report Post" icon, which is the little red triangle with an exclamation mark inside it just below your avatar space. We know the urge to respond to troll posts/flaming/spam is very temping, but please allow a moderator to deal with it as opposed to taking matters into your own hands.

Thanks,
The Mod Squad

UPDATE: November 29/2011

Please refresh yourselves with the board rules, especially the following:

2) Trolling: Do not post topics with the sole purpose of starting a dispute. Note that a person disagreeing with your opinion is NOT trolling; keep it civil, even if you're sure the other person is wrong. When visiting the team forums please note that they are fan forums for that team and are here mainly for the enjoyment of that team's fans. Do not visit team forums to cheer against or demean their team, or cheer for their opponent. In other words, if you want to cheer for the Habs and criticize the Bruins, do it on the Habs board. And if someone is doing the opposite on the Bruins board, don't start flaming them to defend the honor of your team. Either ignore it respectfully disagree and move on. Wishing illness or injury on someone will almost always be regarded as trolling or offensive. We do not permit any forums to be used to demean/insult the fans of other teams. That is considered trolling. Copying posts from one HFBoard team forum to another for this purpose is considered trolling.

This goes especially for right after the other team loses to the Sens (or wins for that matter). Emotions after games tend to run high, and it is generally advisable to stay away and refrain from posting on the other team's forum. Even innocent comments may be taken the wrong way and seen as trolling or rubbing the win in.

As well, this "trolling" that you do will only incite retaliation by the posters on that other board, and bring them over to this board, resulting in useless clutter and more work for your friendly neighbourhood Sens mods. Do you really want that on your conscience? Do you?

Thanks for your cooperation.

Alright folks, since it has become clear that some of you like to intentionally mis-spell players/coaches names, expect to face consequences. Chronic or egregrious offenders will be banned from participating on the Ottawa Senators board, and potentially issued a warning or infraction. The length of the forum ban will be up to the issuing moderator.

Heads up for all of you regarding main board threads:

Please do NOT post a link to the thread on our board if you feel it is trolling our team, our players, our fanbase, or our city. Instead, report the OP so mods can deal with the problem directly. The report button is that little red and white triangle with a black line through it; it appears under their avatar and user information.

- Thanks,

Playoff Board

Alright folks, with the playoffs upon us, it's time for an update from a moderation standpoint.

You may visit the playoff board and post there in a manner that abides by the site rules. Tensions between fan bases who's teams are playing against each other are without a doubt going to increase.

Please consider this your one and only warning before the board becomes available to visit:

If anyone on this board makes a threat in passing, in a thread on the Sens board, to go to the playoff board just to troll Team X, you will receive a forum ban from the playoff board for a minimumof 3 (three) months.

The same goes for people who receive infractions from posting on the playoff board. We ask that people remain vigilant and report posts that may further degrade the overall quality of the boards.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding with this matter,
SS

It's playoff time. You know what that means? Yes, golf clubs and Leafs jokes, but all kidding aside it's time to brush up on your HF rules knowledge to make the moderators' jobs slightly easier in this high-emotion playoff atmosphere. I'm going to paraphrase the rather excellent post used by Nemesis for the Sharks board.

Site rules are, as always, found here.

For Sens Fans Posting in the Sens Forum:

1. What do I do when an opposing fan is trolling/flaming/wreaking havoc in our threads or our GDTs?

The answer is simple. Do NOT reply to the post. Instead, use the REPORT BUTTON. I'll illustrate where to find this button using a graphic (credits to Nemesis):

ReportButton.jpg

This button will ask you to give your reason for reporting the post in question. Write something to the point. "Trolling" or "Flaming" or "Offensive Language" are your basic examples. Once you've submitted your report, it goes directly to mods and includes a link to the post in question. This lets us, the mods, find the post immediately, and it will be dealt with according to the discretion of the responding mod.

2. I'm making a GDT, how much can I mock the opposing fans?

Use your discretion. GDTs for all Senators home games in the playoffs will be used as the OPs for the Stanley Cup Forum GDTs. That means that what you post here will be copy-pasted there. Be mindful of that.

3. Can I chirp opposing teams in our own forum?

Obviously this is a yes. But you must still comply with the site rules. That means no flaming, trolling, spamming, etc. No libel either! More directly, feel free to chirp another team and its players, but avoid making derogatory remarks or generalizations about a fanbase or a specific posters.

Also note that there will inevitably be non-Sens fans on our board during the playoffs. As long as these fans are posting in a respectful manner, they are welcome to contribute. Avoid saying "GTFO" to any non-Sens fan who enters our boards. If you feel they are trolling or taunting, refer to question #1 and report them.

4. Can I quote opposing teams' threads and posts to our boards because they're epic lulz?

The answer is no, you shouldn't. It's a violation of the site rules, which are linked to at the top of the page.

For Visitors in the Sens Forum:

1. Can I post on these boards even though I'm not a Sens fan?

You most certainly can post if you want. Just be mindful that this is the Sens forum, and it's for Sens fans first and foremost. That means you'll probably see things that are biased toward Ottawa. If you can't handle that bias, don't post here. If you are ok with the bias, be sure you are on your best behaviour; this means both complying by the forum rules and being respectful of the pro-Ottawa bias.

To reiterate: no trolling, flaming, or posting is allowed. Constructive criticism needs to be written in a respectful tone.

For Everyone using the Sens Forum:

1. Thread and forum bans will be used liberally to keep the peace. Anyone trolling a GDT will be thread banned immediately. If you cause significant or repeated disturbances in GDTs you will be thread banned. If it appears that you are a habitual problem in multiple threads, you will be forum banned for however long we deem appropriate.

2. Everyone is going to be treated equally in the eyes of the mods. It doesn't matter whether you've been here for 9 years or 9 days.

3. Consider this thread your official warning of mod expectations. There won't be any consideration given for "but I didn't know!", nor should you expect to be let of easy "just this once" when we think you should know better.

4. The mods of different areas do talk to one another. So if something happens on the playoff board or an opponent's board that impacts here, we'll know. And if something happens here that impacts other boards, those mods will know too.

Mods from one area cannot and will not overrule or rescind the decisions or moderations of our compatriots from other parts of the site.

If you have a problem with any mod anywhere on the site, you are encouraged to try and work it out with them. Failing that, you can send an e-mail to [email protected] and it will be reviewed by the appropriate Team Leader.

Thanks everyone. And enjoy the playoffs,

ModSquad

Folks,

To expand on an earlier point...

PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO TROLLS AND JUST REPORT THEM INSTEAD!!!!!

With the playoffs so busy, so intense, and so heated, global mods like me may have to go into boards they usually don't frequent and deal with stuff to keep things on the up and up. You do not know how much harder you make it on mods to clean up threads when you decide to feed the trolls. Tonight's Game 2 with the Rangers proved that, both on your forum and their forum.

See a troll? Report it, don't reply to them. Let us deal with them and make it quick and painless. Your cooperation is strongly urged!

Another note folks, as we've been seeing a lot of it lately: wishing illness and/or injury on a player.

Straight from the site rules:

2) Trolling: Wishing illness or injury on someone will almost always be regarded as trolling or offensive.

There's a fine line between wanting someone to be knocked on their ass and wishing for player X to have his leg broken.

In addition, I mentioned this in the Sens Lounge but I feel that it should be here too. If you have trouble resisting the urge to go over to the Rangers board to troll them and do not want to accumulate infractions from doing so, PM a moderator and ask them to remove you from the thread. The Rangers board is for their fans first and foremost, just like the Sens board is for us, and they have a right to vent there.

Thanks for your continued cooperation,
SS

One more thing, please don't quote posts from other boards and post them on the Sens board. This is considered trolling.

Thanks for your cooperation,

Update: 2012 off-season

I want to remind everyone that now that we are in off-season mode, that we DO NOT flood the boards with trade proposals and/or signing F/A proposals. There is a thread specifically for that and your proposal no matter how good you think it is, is no exception to this rule. If you decide to circumvent this rule, you will be warned. Anything after the 1st warning will result in an infraction.

THIS IS NOT A TEST.

A reminder for everyone- if a moderator closed your thread, deleted your post, etc. there was likely a good reason for it. If you have an issue with something we've done, you take it up with us politely via PM. Complaining openly on the boards is strictly prohibited, and is subject to a moderator abuse infraction.

Reminder:

When you see a trolling post from a fan of another team on the board, please click the "Report Post" button instead of the "Quote Post" button to give a snarky reply.

This is because if you quote a post that is against the rules, your friendly neighborhood overworked and underpaid mods have to delete your post as well as the original post that was against the rules.

Do you really want to be responsible for mod burnout? Do you? DO YOU?

It is becoming increasing noticeable how often "gay" and "Pejorative Slured" are used in slang around these parts. It is both immature and offensive to use those words so loosely. It will NOT be tolerated on these boards and any further use of it will result in an infraction in addition to a ban from the Senators board for one week.

Consider yourselves warned.

Ok, here's the deal. Absolutely ANY baseless speculation regarding Karlsson's (or ANY other player for that matter) apparent off-ice issues IS libel. Everyone has been warned multiple times within the past 24 hours yet it is still being discussed. Here is the rule regarding libel:

13) Libel: Any posts libeling players, prospects, or hockey personnel. It's not acceptable to post that you heard Player X has a drinking/drug/sex/personal problem from a "good" source. Do not post information that can be considered defamatory without a link to a credible media source. Other forums, personal websites, hearsay, and personal testimonials are not considered credible.

If we see ANY more baseless speculation and/or rumors, you will be removed from participating on the Sens board for no less than 3 (three) months.

This is your absolute final warning.

I'd like to add to this, that discussing player's "Nightlife" extra-curricular activities, without proof, also falls under the "Libel" category, and we are going to start infracting for anyone making outlandish claims without proof about a player's drinking/substance habits. Period.

This goes for anyone on the team.

No more warnings.
