Do many other teams have late round 2016 picks getting meaningful minutes in the SHL?

No.

2016 Swedish drafted Dman (first time eligable) playing in Sweden (TOI is for SHL, Champions Hockey League don't have listed):

Linus Nässén (89th OA): 1 SHL game, 1 CHL game (0:55 TOI/G)
Filip Berglund (91st OA): 7 SHL games, 5 CHL games (6:48 TOI/G)
Jacob Cederholm (97th OA): 2 SHL games, 3 CHL games (5:36 TOI/G)
Linus Högberg (139th OA): 8 SHL games, 2 CHL games (9:47 TOI/G)
Jakob Stenqvist (176th OA): 3 Allsvenskan games
Arvid Henriksson (187th OA): 0 Pro games
David Bernhardt (199th OA): 4 SHL games, 4 CHL games (8:08 TOI/G)

So yeh... of every single Swedish first year eligable Dman drafted the two the Flyers took in the 5th and 7th rounds are playing the most minutes in senior hockey and have played 2nd & 3rd most games.

Plus they are both on Sweden U20's roster for the 4 nations in Gothenburg at start of November. None of the other 5 are... (though Nässén, Berglund & Cederholm have played for U20 side this year already.)

He also, along with Högberg and Sandström, got picked to the Swedish u20 team. Not the WJC one, though. Yet at least.

If they make it, we could have 7 guys again at the WJC all while having Provy and Konecny in the NHL who are eligible. That's great drafting.

Jacob Larsson is starting out in the NHL. So if he sticks by then that could be a spot opening. My understanding is that Oliver Kylington isn't as highly thought of amongst the Swedish brass either.

Hogberg's probably too young but Bernhardt I think could have a chance. He's a pretty good PP guy & usually special teams is a factor in picking a #7 defensemen.

Yeah like how Sanheim was the best PP defensemen on Canada but was used as the 7th D. :shakehead

He was being sarcastic - he and Flyguy (among others) were ****ting on the Canada coaches that whole tournament, for good reason

I'm gonna build a cannon that shoots Lowry sized projectiles into a Lowry sized hole and then cover it with a Lowry sized rock.

While we're at it, dump his best bud Hicketts in there too.

This pick reminds me of Dallas picking Esa Lindell in 2012. Both were 6'3 offensively talented defensemen, who lit up the junior circuit in their draft years but had little to no pro experience. Relatively speaking, Lindell was a little younger than Bernhardt is, and had a good showing at the U18s in his draft year which is why he went in the 3rd round and not the 7th. Lindell didn't become a full time pro at the senior level until his draft+2 season (Jokerit was a tough team to crack for a young player) but had his breakout the following season at age 20/21 and followed that season up with a strong showing in the AHL last year. On track to be a decent pro.

Or maybe he's Klingberg? :sarcasm:

6'3 203 with those kind of moves?
And a 7th rd pick?
And we wrote off Europe for a decade to draft NA slugs?

Bernhardt has played in two J20 (Swedish junior) games in last two days...

he picked up 3a, +4, 9 SOG combined in the games.

Basically playing every game he can for seniors and juniors now.

4g, 8a, 12p, +6 in the 8gp at the junior level this year.

That might be due to the scouting change as well. IIRC we had an old Swede, Inge Hammarström (?) scouting for yeeeeeears. (looked it up now, he was with the Flyer sfrom 1989 to 2008, not sure if there even was one between 2008 and 2013). In 2013 that changed to a younger guy, from Örnsköldsvik. Since then it seems to me that the quality of our Swedish picks has improved a LOT.

Bernhardt playing in the J20 right now...

nothing amazing with that you say?

Well, today's game is his 4th game in 4 days and his 5th game in the last 6 days as he bobs up and down between SHL and J20.

Probably wont have to worry about that kids conditioning!

Really good game from him today in SHL.

Played 14:16 and was +2.

Solid in all three zones. Had some really nice breakouts and used his size nicely on boards and around the net.

Played his first junior (J20) game in ~3 months today.

Had 2 goals, +2 and 5 shots in a 4-3 win!

Will likely get a few more in before end of season... it is starting to get to crunch time for the J20 teams.

His side are in the fortsättningsserie, which is basically where the worst 10 J20 teams from that season fight it out, with the top six then making the play-offs.
